The New York Jets have requested an absurd 17 interviews for their vacant head coaching job, but there is a clear leader in the clubhouse right now. After a very promising 2024 season, Detroit Lions defensive coordinator and former Jets cornerback Aaron Glenn is at the top of New York's list.

Glenn, who is also considered to be one of the top candidates for the New Orleans Saints job after his assistant coaching spell there, has already interviewed for the Jets vacancy. He's earned impressive marks after turning the Lions' defense from one of the worst in football to one of the best.

The Jets are by no means done their coaching search yet, but the latest buzz from Adam Schefter in an appearance on Pat McAfee's show makes it sound like the Jets will need to be talked out of hiring someone other than Glenn.

Schefter mentioned Glenn as the only coach by name he considered to be high up in the Jets' minds as they try to find their next coach. New Orleans is still hovering around, but the Jets appear to be very interested in Glenn.

Adam Schefter links Lions DC Aaron Glenn to NY Jets head coaching job

The positives and negatives around Glenn, who played for the Jets for eight seasons, are eerily similar to what was said about Robert Saleh when New York hired him away from the 49ers. Glenn's early tenure in Detroit, like Saleh's in San Francisco, was below average.

However, Glenn managed to turn things around once he got some better players. 2024 has been his masterpiece, as he has kept the defense competitive despite some comically bad injury luck. Glenn has multiple extremely strong testimonials from players on both sides of the ball in Detroit.

Not only is Glenn a well-respected leader who could poach multiple members from Detroit's highly-touted offensive coaching staff if he gets hired, but he has as much pride in being a great Jet as any coach who has interviewed for a job with this organization. That passion and fire are needed as badly as any sort of schematic excellence.

If the Jets miss out on Glenn, should he go to New Orleans, Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores has been mentioned as a popular backup plan. However, Schefter seems to add more fuel to the Glenn fire, naming him the top candidate in Woody Johnson's mind at this point.
