NY Jets owner, with the help of The 33rd Team, has conducted a thorough 33-candidate search for the team's next head coach and general manager over the last couple of months. The head coach search came to a conclusion this week with the hiring of Aaron Glenn.
Multiple reports suggest the GM search is nearing its end as well, with many expecting a hire to happen imminently (read: today).
The search is officially down to three confirmed finalists: Washington Commanders assistant general manager Lance Newmark, Denver Broncos assistant general manager Darren Mougey, and Cincinnati Bengals senior personnel executive Trey Brown. But not all names are equal here.
The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt reported Friday morning that not only is a decision expected to be reached as soon as today but that said decision is between Mougey and Brown. Newmark is seemingly not seen as a legitimate candidate anymore.
NY Jets will choose between Darren Mougey and Trey Brown for GM role
Newmark interviewed with the Jets on Tuesday and was seen as a logical general manager to pair with Glenn. The longtime NFL executive spent over 25 years in Detroit, crossing paths with Glenn, before he was named the Commanders assistant GM last offseason.
Most expected the Jets to hire Glenn and Newmark around the same time, but as news of the former's hire was reported on Wednesday, it quickly became clear that the team wasn't sold on the latter.
The Jets expanded their second round of general manager interviews to include Mougey and Brown, two candidates who had interviewed for the job earlier in the month. Those interviews were completed on Thursday.
Mougey has spent his entire post-playing career with the Denver Broncos, starting as a scouting intern in 2012 before working his way up to assistant GM in just 10 years. He was retained — and promoted — under new general manager George Patron.
Brown has spent time with three vastly different organizations and also comes from a scouting background. He's had stints with the New England Patriots, Philadelphia Eagles, and Cincinnati Bengals and is also seen as a rising executive in the football world.
Both Mougey and Brown are just 39 years old, meaning the Jets are expected to hire a GM who is younger than their current starting quarterback. Aaron Rodgers turned 41 years old in December.
The Jets' head coach and general manager searches have been as extensive as any process in recent memory. Today might be the day we finally reach a conclusion.
