The NY Jets have their new head coach. The team agreed to terms on a five-year deal with former Pro Bowl cornerback and standout Detroit Lions assistant Aaron Glenn on Wednesday, thus kicking off a new era of Jets football.
That new era won't be complete until the Jets hire a general manager to pair with Glenn, however. Many believed that GM would be Washington Commanders executive Lance Newmark, and while he's still in the running, it seems the Jets might be going in a different direction.
CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones is reporting that Denver Broncos assistant general manager Darren Mougey and Cincinnati Bengals senior personnel executive are set to interview with the Jets on Thursday.
Jones also reports that "there's an expectation a decision may be made by the end of [the] day." Newmark is still in consideration, but the Jets appear to be leaning toward hiring either Mougey or Brown.
NY Jets closing in on a general manager hire
Mougey and Brown were two of the candidates the Jets brought in for their first round of general manager interviews earlier this month. The indication is that one of Mougey, Brown, or Newmark will be named the next GM.
All signs pointed to Newmark joining Glenn, who he crossed paths with in Detroit, when the two interviewed on Tuesday, but the fact that the Jets have expanded their search in the following days doesn't bode well for the longtime Lions executive.
Mougey is an intriguing candidate who has quickly climbed the ranks within the Denver Broncos organization over the past decade. A former college quarterback and wide receiver, he began as a scouting intern with the Broncos in 2012 and, by 2022, had risen to the role of assistant general manager.
In just three years, Mougey was promoted from an area scout all the way to his current role as assistant GM under George Paton. He's seen as one of the fastest-rising stars in the NFL's executive world. He also stands at 6-foot-6, for what it's worth.
Brown is an appealing candidate in his own right, having bounced around between the New England Patriots, Philadelphia Eagles, and Cincinnati Bengals. He's garnered a reputation as someone who blends analytics with old-school football beliefs and is very respected by agents around the league, per SNY's Connor Hughes.
The Jets have settled on three qualified finalists for their open general manager position. Expect one of Newmark, Mougey, or Brown to get the job — possibly as soon as today.
