After several months of questions about the future of former Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby and his jump to the NFL, the league has provided answers, and he'll have to wait to try to get into the pros.
After Sorsby and his team applied for it, the NFL has decided not to hold a supplemental draft, as he is the only player who has requested to enter it.
Therefore, Sorsby will have to wait until at least the 2027 NFL Draft, in what essentially shakes out to a one-year suspension from the league.
In New York Jets news, the debate around adding Sorsby and what draft pick they should use to bid on his services can be put on hold until at least next spring.
NFL cancels supplemental draft, barring Brendan Sorsby's entry into the league
The NFL's Management Council provided a statement explaining its reasoning for canceling the supplemental draft.
"As Commissioner Goodell has emphasized, participation in the NFL is a privilege that carries with it significant responsibilities, including accountability. By all accounts, you are a talented player with the potential for future success. We encourage you to focus on preparing for possible entry into the NFL through the 2027 NFL Annual Draft."Lawrence P. Ferazani, Jr.
The statement further pointed to Sorsby's lack of accountability in his request to enter the supplemental draft, as he did not provide any of the details of the NCAA's investigation.
"Your Petition does not address these matters. Nor does it demonstrate accountability for your conduct or indicate whether, or how, you would adhere to the League’s rules and policies governing the integrity of competition."Lawrence P. Ferazani, Jr.
Sorsby and his legal team responded shortly thereafter, via ESPN's Pete Thamel, saying they were planning on pursuing the decision through the NFLPA.
"It is a violation of the CBA and the law. We will pursue this immediately with the NFLPA."Jeffrey Kessler
It seems like the Sorsby-NFL saga will have to wait for a conclusion another year, as the former Texas Tech and Cincinnati quarterback is facing consequences for his reported actions.
For the Jets, the quarterback can officially be kicked down the road until 2027.
