Tuesday morning began quite the media firestorm within the NY Jets organization. Woody Johnson had never fired a head coach in-season, but made the decision to do so with Robert Saleh.
After the Saleh firing, there were many questions needing answers. Immediately, of course, was the question of who will be taking his place as the interim head coach. That one was answered first and foremost, as defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich will be manning that role with an opportunity to land the permanent gig.
But, beyond all of the coaching-related questions, there was still another enormous issue at hand: the Davante Adams trade situation.
For a little over a week now, the star wideout had been involved in trade discussions after demanding out of Vegas. And, of course, the Jets were an obvious connection right off the bat, due to Adams' relationship with quarterback Aaron Rodgers. But would the firing of Saleh have any impact on a possible trade, now?
The events on Tuesday were already enough for ownership and the front office to handle. Add in trading for an All-Pro type of receiver, and they've got their hands full.
After Saleh was fired, reports emerged that the Jets were still in on trading for the Las Vegas Raiders star. While the Jets are indeed still interested, the Saleh firing may still have an impact.
The Robert Saleh firing appears to have slowed Davante Adams trade talks
This is a fluid situation, of course. Things can change by the minute. But, as of right now, ESPN's Adam Schefter believes the events on Tuesday could lead to trade talks being eased up, for the time being.
"I think the events in New York and the events in New Orleans may have slowed down talks with those two teams, and we'll see if and when they can pick up some steam," Schefter said on Tuesday's edition of NFL Live.
Not only did New York have a chaotic day, but the New Orleans Saints also received some startling news in regards to quarterback Derek Carr, who sustained an oblique injury in their Week 5 loss to Kansas City.
Carr is now set to miss some time, which is significant in this conversation because of the Saints' interest in trading for Adams. Not only does Adams have a relationship with Rodgers, but Carr was his quarterback just recently in Las Vegas; not to mention, they were college teammates at Fresno State.
So, the bad news might be that trade talks have slowed down. But the good news is those trade talks could have been slowed not only for the Jets, but also the Saints. Adams has identified the two teams as his top preferred destinations, although teams like the Buffalo Bills, Pittsburgh Steelers, among others, could be interested.
For now, we'll hope things calm down enough for the Jets to re-engage in serious talks and get a deal done. Clearly things need to change on offense, and Adams would be a large part of that.
