NFL insider’s latest Aaron Rodgers intel reveals an ugly breakup could be coming
By Ryan Heckman
To say this season has not gone anywhere near what New York Jets fans had hoped would be a massive understatement. But, if many Jets fans were honest, it's par for the course with this franchise.
A year and a half ago, the acquisition of quarterback Aaron Rodgers was supposed to equal a turnaround. It was a quick fix, sure, but getting a future Hall of Fame quarterback who still felt he could play looked to be the answer ... at least, for the immediate future.
What has transpired since the Rodgers trade is every bit of the worst-case scenario for New York. After missing his first season with the team due to an Achilles tear, Rodgers has yet to look like the Rodgers of old this season.
The Jets have now lost seven of their last eight games and hold a record of just 3-8. Not necessarily mathematically out of it, but amidst a lost season no matter how you spin it, the Jets are searching for what's next.
They've already fired their head coach and general manager. They've gone out and traded for Davante Adams after adding plenty of players with whom Rodgers was familiar since acquiring him.
But for what? This? Jets fans have had enough, and it seems owner Woody Johnson has reached that point as well.
Aaron Rodgers and the Jets could be heading for a disastrous breakup sooner than we think
According to The Athletic's Dianna Russini, one of the more well-respected NFL insiders in the business (despite what some Jets fans seem to suggest), the Jets and Rodgers seem to have come to a crossroads.
Russini reported that there has been "lost confidence" in Rodgers from Johnson's perspective. She also stated that there are some players on the team who seem to be "tiptoeing" around the fact that Rodgers is no longer the player he once was.
It sounds like an awkward atmosphere, to say the least.
Russini would also go on to hint that there's a possibility of Rodgers being placed on injured reserve after the report that he has not been healthy this year. Shutting him down for the year and waving the white flag would be quite the move, but that's not all.
She also wrote that there are some around the league who believe the Jets could make an even bigger statement by releasing Rodgers altogether.
It should be noted that Rodgers denied much of Russini's report in his weekly appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday. Whether his words should be taken completely at face value is ultimately up to you.
Cutting Rodgers in the middle of the season would be something not many would have seen coming, and it sure would send a message. The message?
Johnson is blowing it up and the Jets are officially in the midst of a mini rebuild. General manager, head coach, and quarterback are all holes that need to be filled shortly — that's not an ideal place to be in, and Johnson has to be very careful that he gets these decisions right.
