For those who guessed that Minkah Fitzpatrick would end the New York Jets’ historic interception drought, come collect your prize.

Fitzpatrick snagged an errant Tyson Bagent pass in the second quarter on Sunday afternoon, marking the Jets’ first pick in 637 days. The turnover came less than a quarter after officials overturned a T’Vondre Sweat interception following an illegal hands-to-face call.

No flags were thrown following Fitzpatrick’s interception, guaranteeing the Jets their first pick in the Aaron Glenn era.

Fitzpatrick had missed the Jets’ last two games after suffering a groin injury in Week 1. He’d previously told ESPN’s Rich Cimini that breaking the interception streak would be “pretty nice [and] pretty sweet.”

Needless to say, the three-time All-Pro safety got his wish.

New York Jets fans can't believe they finally recorded an interception

As can be imagined, fans were absolutely ecstatic about Fitzpatrick's interception. After a 638-day, 643-pass attempt drought, New York's secondary finally forced a turnover through the air.

Another fan praised general manager Darren Mougey's decision to acquire Fitzpatrick and disparaged the Miami Dolphins for parting ways with their former first-round draft choice.

After all, it was the Jets' AFC East rival who made the decision this past March to trade Fitzpatrick to New York for a measly seventh-round draft pick nonetheless.

Fitzpatrick, who is enjoying his first game back with the Jets after suffering a groin injury against the Tennessee Titans in Week 1, had made his impact known almost immediately.

Through the first half of action, Fitzpatrick has eight tackles, including four solo, one pass break-up, and of course, the interception.

Minkah Fitzpatrick's interception was almost the second pick of the day for the New York Jets

Fitzpatrick is a proven ballhawk who entered Sunday with 21 career interceptions, and fans were already feeling optimistic despite Sweat’s overturned interception. It would have been fitting if officials hadn’t thrown a flag and instead allowed a 6-foot-4, 366-pound nose tackle, of all people, to make NFL history.

The Jets’ most recent interception came on January 5, 2025, when Ashtyn Davis picked off Dolphins quarterback Snoop Huntley twice in the second quarter. For perspective, 89 players had multiple interceptions last season.
