The New York Jets saw an old friend under center in their Week 9 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs, though Justin Fields' chance to show his old team what a mistake they made proved to be a nightmare for Gang Green's 2015 starter. Just one play into the game, Fields made a colossal error.
Fields came into the game with Kansas City facing a third-and-one. The team's refusal to use quarterback sneaks with Patrick Mahomes came under fire in recent weeks, which led to Fields getting his moment in the spotlight. To call what happened next a colossal mistake is an understatement.
Not only did Fields fail to get a first down, but he lost control of the ball, leading to Demario Davis recovering in Chiefs territory. Already up 3-0 after a long opening drive, the Jets proceeded to cash in on a second field goal to go up 6-0 at Arrowhead Stadium. The revenge game has become yet another comical Fields blunder.
Former New York Jets QB Justin Fields fumbled on Chiefs' QB sneak
Fields went 2-7 in his nine starts with the Jets, throwing seven touchdowns against just one interception. What those stats don't capture is how he was inoperably bad at times. His hesitation to throw the ball in the name of avoiding turnovers led to missed chunk plays and bad sacks.
In one game, Fields and the Jets managed -10 passing yards (when taking sack yardage into account) while losing by two to the Denver Broncos. Despite results that confirmed the former first-round pick was by no means a starter at the NFL level, the Jets were able to get a sixth-round pick in exchange for him.
Justin Fields has not done much for the Kansas City Chiefs
Fields, who beat out rookie Garrett Nussmeier for the starting quarterback job, has played sparingly for Kansas City this season despite the fact that Patrick Mahomes was seemingly rushed back from injury. The Chiefs clearly didn't feel confident enough in Fields to run the offense, as one of the few plays they trusted him with ended in disaster for the Jets.
Kansas City would later retake the lead, as any team with Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid should be expected to do against the lowly Jets, but any chance Fields had to gain some positive momentum heading into this season has been washed away. At least the Jets are a more watchable bad product than they were with Fields in town.
