Chiefs are petrified of ex-Jets QB Justin Fields after latest Patrick Mahomes news

The New York Jets seemed more than happy to dump the problem of fixing Justin Fields on the Kansas City Chiefs, and it doesn't seem like the Chiefs are too thrilled about the idea of him possibly playing.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said that Mahomes, who is recovering from a torn ACL and LCL that ruined the end of Kansas City's season, was "cleared to participate fully" at training camp. While this might sound like Mahomes is closer to returning than many initially believed, it could be taken as a sign that the thought of Fields filling in for a few games is frightening to the Chiefs.

That seems like way too quick when it comes to ACL recovery, right? Either Mahomes is Wolverine and can instantly recover from even the most serious of ailments instantly, or the Chiefs are so scared of having to play Fields that they are willing to play a dangerous game of chicken with the game's marquee star quarterback.

Fields going to Kansas City always seemed like an odd fit. While the Andy Reid boost may improve his statistics, Fields' inability to play with tempo and get rid of the ball accurately will lead to him possibly taking some bad sacks and refusing to hit open wide receivers down the field. Sound familiar, Jets fans?

There may be no more valuable lower-body ligament in football than Mahomes' new ACL. Even if Fields gets them off to a slow start this season and prevents them from contending in 2026, is that really worth putting the main factor behind their success in the next decade in harm's way?

In theory, Fields could have a fairly easy road to success with Kansas City, as their Weeks 2-4 games come against the Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, and Las Vegas Raiders. Fields proved last year with the Jets that he needs immense special teams and turnover luck to even beat teams of that quality, however.

Fields has graduated past the point where he can be viewed as a diamond in the rough who needs the right system. The Bears, Steelers, and Jets have all dumped him in a three-season span, and his stock within the league is so damaged that Kansas City is seemingly preparing to play Mahomes on half a leg instead of the former Ohio State star.
