A twist!

The New York Jets have made their Breece Hall decision just prior to Tuesday's 4 pm ET tag deadline. Despite weeks of speculation that the team would opt to place the transition tag on their standout running back, the team has gone in a different direction.

Multiple reports confirm that the Jets have, somewhat surprisingly, placed the franchise tag on Hall. Once he signs it, the tag will be worth $14.29 million and would make Hall the fourth-highest-paid running back in the NFL by average annual value, trailing only Christian McCaffrey, Saquon Barkley, and Derrick Henry.

The expectation had been that the Jets would choose to use the transition tag on Hall instead, which would have come in at $11.32 million, saving the team a valuable $3 million in cap space.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported Monday night that a transition tag was “likely incoming” for the Jets’ star running back, while ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler echoed that sentiment earlier in the week, writing that the “overwhelming belief in league circles is that the Jets will use the transition tag.”

Instead, less than 24 hours after Garafolo's report, the Jets have gone a different, more expensive route. So what changed?

The sudden shift in the Jets' plans suggests Hall's market may be more robust than the team initially believed. The transition tag would have allowed Hall to test the market while giving the Jets the right to match any offer, but it comes with no draft compensation if they decline to do so.

The franchise tag, on the other hand, locks him in at a higher one-year salary and removes the risk of another team structuring a deal the Jets would feel pressured to match. If the Jets sensed genuine interest around the league, the safer play was to eliminate that uncertainty altogether.

Essentially, the Jets are paying a premium to prevent other teams from signing Hall to an offer sheet that they would then have to decide whether to match. It is the safer, more expensive route.

The Jets and Hall reportedly remain in talks about a potential extension at some point this offseason, and while the team may be hopeful a deal gets done, it seems unlikely that Hall is in any rush to sign a long-term contract right now.

Hall has repeatedly expressed frustration with the organization in recent months, and it does not take a body language expert to read between the lines and see that he is not entirely pleased with his situation.

He may stop short of outright requesting a trade, but that doesn't mean he's going to jump at the opportunity to secure a long-term deal in New York. This is a situation that bears monitoring over the next calendar year.

But for now, Hall is back with the Jets, albeit on a more expensive one-year deal than most probably expected.
