Perhaps the New York Jets can find some positives in the rival New England Patriots’ recent A.J. Brown trade.
True, the Jets are now tasked with covering Brown twice a year, and he’ll likely be incredibly motivated after a frustrating end to his time in Philadelphia.
However, Brown’s arrival in New England is expected to have a significant impact on the receiver room. Kayshon Boutte is the subject of trade rumors while awaiting a new contract, and others near the bottom of the roster could be in trouble.
Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay believes that the Patriots could cut ties with DeMario Douglas, the former Liberty receiver who is entering the final year of his rookie deal. Douglas had a career-low 31 catches and 447 yards last year.
“If Douglas does hit free agency, expect him to generate a lot of interest from receiver-needy squads,” Kay wrote.
That group, in Kay’s opinion, might very well include the Jets.
Could the Jets add Patriots receiver DeMario Douglas?
As of publication, there is no indication that the Patriots intend to trade or release Douglas within the coming weeks.
Kay pointed out that Douglas and Efton Chism III could be in line for the final receiver spot. However, Chism offers far greater special teams value, whereas Douglas typically does not play special teams.
Douglas is only two seasons removed from a 66-catch, 621-yard season. However, Steffon Diggs’ presence, coupled with Josh McDaniels’ return, contributed to Douglas’ reduced workload last year.
To his credit, Douglas remained moderately productive, finishing with 31 catches, 447 yards, and three touchdowns. He added another eight catches for 84 yards and a touchdown over four playoff games.
Barring injuries, though, it’s difficult to envision Douglas being a likely Day 1 starter if he joined the Jets.
Garrett Wilson is obviously guaranteed a starting spot, with Adonai Mitchell expected to be the No. 2. Seeing as the Jets just used a first-round pick on Omar Cooper Jr., it’s safe to assume they’ll want to see as much of him as possible.
Douglas is an appealing rotational option, though. He’s a far superior depth piece than the likes of Tim Patrick or Isaiah Williams.
Besides, it would be fitting for an ex-Patriot to become a noteworthy contributor for the Jets. Danny Woodhead still leaves a very bitter taste in our mouths, thank you very much.
