We now know exactly what the New York Jets' schedule looks like for the 2026 regular season, and there are several games with plenty of extra juice thanks to several factors.
Week 1 against the Tennessee Titans should be exciting. Ex-Jets head coach Robert Saleh will be looking to get one up on his former team, while New York's current head coach, Aaron Glenn, needs to prove he's the right guy for this job.
In Week 3, Glenn returns to the team where he cut his teeth calling defensive plays, with the Jets facing the Detroit Lions at Ford Field. While an exciting matchup, the stakes aren't incredibly high vs. an NFC opponent.
The real must-watch game of the year? New York's Week 8 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders, thanks to the added factors of a Geno Smith revenge game, and a "what could have been?" with No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza,
Jets-Raiders matchup tabbed as 'must-watch' television during 2026 season
The Athletic's beat reporters compiled a list of every NFL team's "must-watch" game on the 2026 schedule, and for the Jets, Zack Rosenblatt chose the Week 8 Jets-Raiders game.
"The Raiders and Jets are the same caliber of team with a few intriguing storylines to track in this one. First, it’s entirely possible that No. 1 pick Fernando Mendoza will be starting over Kirk Cousins by the time this game comes around, and the Jets will get a look at a player they could’ve gotten their hands on had Nick Folk not hit a 56-yard game-winning field goal against the Falcons last year."Zack Rosenblatt
It's hard not to wonder what could have been had the Jets lost just one more game during that dreadful 2025 season.
Had New York held the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, Mendoza would almost certainly have been wearing the Green & White, and who knows what the Jets' quarterback room would be looking like right now.
Second, as Rosenblatt pointed out, there's a revenge match brewing between Smith and his former team, the Raiders. Las Vegas cut ties with the veteran quarterback this offseason, dumping him in a Day 3 pick swap.
The Jets' new signal caller will certainly be looking to stick it to his former team, and this matchup will be the perfect opportunity to do so.
We'll see if Mendoza is starting by the time Week 8 rolls around, but Smith will almost certainly be the one under center for the Jets, barring an injury.
