The New York Jets are headed for their 16th consecutive season without a trip to the playoffs, which is the longest drought in major North American professional sports. For that, they should be trading off some pieces before Tuesday's trade deadline, with running back Breece Hall being one of them.

There's no question that Hall is the Jets' most attractive trade chip that could likely net them a solid return of draft picks. However, the latest trade update on Hall will be disappointing to Jets fans who want the team to continue to build toward the future amid a 2-6 start to the year.

New York Jets are making a big mistake with Breece Hall

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Jets have told teams that they have no intention of trading Hall. Despite receiving calls and interest in the running back, the Jets will not be dealing Hall before Tuesday's deadline.

Not trading Hall is a head-scratcher and a big mistake on the Jets' part. The team signed Hall to a three-year, $43 million contract extension back in May, and it would be wise to move the remainder of his money in a deal, given that the Jets don't look close to competing.

Not to mention, running backs don't have a long shelf life in the NFL, and the Jets have seen Braelon Allen emerge as their top back after Hall missed the last five games with a quad injury. Now would be the time for the Jets to hand the reins over to Allen as their No. 1 running back for the rest of the season.

The Jets also have a total of nine picks in the 2027 NFL Draft and three first rounders, two of which came from trading Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams last year. By trading Hall, the Jets could possibly get another second- or third-round pick to add to their heap of selections.

Hall could also help a number of contending teams who need a running back, such as the cross-town rival New York Giants.

At this point, it just doesn't make much sense for the Jets to hold onto Hall past the deadline. He is back from injury today for the Jets' matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs, but the team should still ride with Allen as their feature back.

The Jets should reconsider the possibility of moving Hall and gaining another high draft pick before Tuesday's deadline. If not, it will be a big mistake and a questionable decision.
