The NY Jets are counting on Justin Fields to lead them as the starting quarterback in 2025, while veteran Tyrod Taylor watches in the wings. It took all of two days in training camp for things to already go off the rails in a fairly major fashion.

Fields suffered a right toe injury that will not be severe enough to sideline him for most of the season, but could put a damper on his play in the preseason. Luckily for the Jets, they were able to keep it together thanks to their experienced backup.

Taylor stepped in, and his veteran moxie helped calm down a young team that was anxious at the thought of losing someone who is so integral to their success. Wide receiver Josh Reynolds took the time out to praise Taylor for how he handled the situation an the impact he had on the team.

“Yeah he brought us up...it was more of we gotta pick it up," Reynolds said of the veteran backup entering his age-36 season and second campaign in Jets green. "One of those vet things, it’s not good enough. It was good for him to do that, especially with what happened.”

Taylor has never has the strongest arm or the most explosive style of play, but many of his best traits will appeal to teams looking for a quality, experienced backup. He can make plays with his legs, avoid turnovers, and pick up the complexities of a new offense fairly quickly.

The Jets did receive hopeful news on the Fields front, as they do not believe he is going to miss the season-opening game in Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee of that becoming true, meaning that Taylor might need to gear up for a Week 1 starting role anyway.

Behind Taylor, the Jets have a pair of undrafted free agents in Adrian Martinez and Brady Cook fighting for the QB3 job. While the Jets may add a veteran as insurance after the Fields injury, Taylor's status as the top backup is likely not in question.

The Jets may not be projected to win a ton of games this season with Taylor or Fields as the starting quarterback, but they won't dive into Arch Manning tank territory if Taylor is able to galvanize the troops and get this offense performing at a respectable level in the coming days.
