The NY Jets have always been a cursed franchise, but the hope in signing quarterback Justin Fields to operate under Aaron Glenn was that he could be the force that helps eradicate the curse. It took two days in training camp for the Jets' bad mojo to rear its head.
Fields suffered what was deemed a lower leg injury, limping away after the first play of the second day of training camp. Fields was seen limping away from the practice field, walking very gingerly before the cart was needed to bring him to the locker room.
Fields was carted to the locker room with his right cleat off, which is just about the worst possible scenario Jets fans could have conjured up before the season. Glenn has not given an update on the severity of the injury.
Jets QB Justin Fields carted off practice field after sustaining lower leg injury
Fields signed a two-year contract with the Jets, though most of the money guaranteed to him in that contract is coming to him this year. Essentially, Fields can earn another year as the starting quarterback if he proves that he has made the necessary improvements as a passer that he needs.
Fields is looking to prove he can be a quality starting quarterback in this league after being unable to reach his full potential with the Chicago Bears. While he made some tweaks with the Pittsburgh Steelers last season, fans need to see more efficiency as a passer.
Fields has drawn praise for his leadership abilities off the field in addition to the improvements he has made as a passer, which makes any potential absence even worse. Tyrod Taylor would be slated to start if Fields is hurt, while QB3 competitors Adrian Martinez and Brady Cook are also on the roster.
While this is still a very fluid situation without any clarity as to the severity of the injury, the fact that Fields needed the cart means that it is likely he is going to miss some time. The Jets' bad luck keeps on coming, no matter what Glenn and Fields trying to do to fix things.
