Jets might be desperate enough to bring back a name fans never expected

Leaving the NY Jets in free agency has traditionally produced one of two very different outcomes. Either the player will become an instant star as soon as he takes the green and white off (Demario Davis) or are such a bad Jets draft pick that they are unable to stick in the NFL.

Safety Marcus Maye is unfortunately trending towards the latter area. Picked in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft right after Jamal Adams, Maye has bounced around between the New Orleans Saints, Miami Dolphins, and Los Angeles Chargers since the Jets decided not to bring him back.

The Jets have safety depth that can be categorized as average, to say the least. Bringing Maye back for one last go-around on a very cheap deal could give them a backup who could provide adequate performance if forced into action for a brief period.

Jets could consider Marcus Maye reunion in free agency

The Jets' current starting safety duo is Tony Adams, who was benched for poor performance last season, and Andre Cisco, who signed a one-year prove-it deal to get his career back on the right track after struggling with the Jacksonville Jaguars last season. Free agent prize Brandon Stephens may also be in the mix after the Azareye'h Thomas NFL Draft pick.

Maye likely won't challenge for a starting role at this point in his career, but he could provide solid depth at a position that wasn't reinforced until they took Malachi Moore in the fourth round. Moore's versatility might make him more appealing in a switchblade role than a traditional deep safety like Maye.

Glenn is a former defensive back and DBs coach, and two of his best developmental success stories are safeties in Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph. Glenn might be one of just a few coaches out there who has the ability to milk some solid play out of Maye.

Unlike Adams, Maye has the ability to pick off some passes in the right scheme due to his ability to cover ground. If the Jets have some extra cap space to play around with, Maye might have to humble up and return to his old stimping grounds.
