New York Jets general manager Darren Mougey is developing a reputation as an aggressive roster builder, as he has made nearly a dozen player trades since taking the job just over a year ago. One of his most hated rivals in the Miami Dolphins may have given the Jets an opportunity to make another deal.
The Dolphins traded standout wide receiver Jaylen Waddle to the Denver Broncos in exchange for a haul of picks that includes the No. 30 overall selection. Denver's receiver room now features Courtland Sutton, Pat Bryant, and Marvin Mims Jr. in addition to Waddle. One of them may be on the move.
Mims is the most likely to be traded, as his production is simply average and he is due for a new contract. The Jets may be interested in his services, especially due to the reduced price.
Mougey was assistant general manager in Denver when Mims was selected, and he could look to bring in one of his former Broncos to improve a room that is incredibly thin behind Garrett Wilson and Adonai Mitchell.
Jets could trade for Broncos WR Marvin Mims Jr. after Jaylen Waddle acquisition
Mims may not be as valuable to the Jets as some other teams. Mims is an All-Pro returner, but with Kene Nwangwu and Isaiah Williams already in town, Mims' ability to flip the game via special teams may not be needed. However, he still has some potential worth mining as a receiver.
Mims would immediately be the No. 3 wide receiver on this roster. Mims, who caught 98 passes for 1,202 yards in three seasons, will turn 24 years old in a few days. With plus speed and the ability to get open underneath, Mims may need a bigger target share to flex his full potential.
With the Waddle trade making it more likely that Miami is going to take a wide receiver like Arizona's Jordyn Tyson or USC's Makai Lemon at No. 11 overall, the Jets adding Mims for cheap can be seen as a form of assurance. If they don't like any of the second-tier receivers like Indiana's Omar Cooper Jr. or Washington's Denzel Boston, they don't have to reach for need.
Mims seems like a perfect change-of-scenery player, and with Mougey clearly liking him enough to have some influence in selecting him with a second-round pick just a few years ago, the Jets could be a team that gives him that chance to prove himself.
