The New York Jets made it a point to overhaul their defense this offseason, particularly on the backend. New faces like Minkah Fitzpatrick and Nahshon Wright expect to play major roles in 2026.
It wasn't for no reason, as the Jets became the first team since the NFL-AFL merger to not record a single interception throughout their entire season, a fact even more embarrassing when you remember they had 17 games to do so.
It's why the Jets went out and found new playmakers for their secondary, looking for guys who have a history of forcing turnovers and making plays on the football.
Wright, the lone cornerback addition the Jets made in free agency, may be the key to breaking that horrendous interception streak.
Nahshon Wright named as Jets' X-Factor thanks to propensity for picks
Fox Sports' Ben Arthur believes Wright could be the Jets' X-Factor this season, thanks to their need for defensive playmaking and the former Chicago Bears cornerback's incredible 2025 season.
"The Jets failed to record a single interception last season, so they desperately need more defensive playmaking in 2026. If Wright plays to the level he did in Chicago in 2025 — five interceptions en route to Pro Bowl honors — New York could have a competitive defense under coach Aaron Glenn."Ben Arthur
Wright is an interesting case. Despite being a Pro Bowler in 2025, as Arthur mentioned, he only signed a one-year, $5.5 million contract on the open market, with $3.5 million guaranteed.
It's likely due to the fact that Wright may be a bit of a one-year wonder. Before 2025, he had only three starts and one career interception to his name.
If he can prove again in 2026 that he's one of the league's best interceptors, the Jets defense should be all the better for it.
It's not a guarantee Wright even starts next season. He'll be competing with second-year cornerback Azareye'h Thomas throughout training camp for the starting spot opposite Brandon Stephens.
Reports throughout OTAs and minicamp suggested Wright was already ahead of Thomas, receiving the most first-team reps between the two.
But the real test will come in late July, when the Jets reconvene for training camp.
If Wright can maintain his Pro Bowl form in 2026, he could be the exact playmaker New York's defense desperately lacked last season.
