When the New York Jets signed cornerback Nahshon Wright in free agency, it came as a bit of a surprise. Not only did Wright's contract seem small, but he picked the Jets of all teams.
For a guy who was a Pro Bowler in 2025, you would expect him to sign a bit of a bigger pact than the one-year, $3.5 million contract. But decision-makers around the league are clearly betting on Wright being something of a one-year wonder.
Regardless, with the small number Wright signed for, you would expect multiple teams to be involved in his market. Instead, he landed with a team that was 3-14 in 2025.
What is it about the Jets that drew Wright in? Why did he decide to bet on himself while playing in New York?
Why did Nahshon Wright choose the Jets this offseason?
Speaking with reporters after minicamp on Wednesday, Wright revealed what went into the decision to sign with New York.
"AG (Aaron Glenn) called me personally, we spoke for maybe 30 minutes, and it just seemed like the right situation to come here and be able to prove myself again"Nahshon Wright
It's cool to see the Jets' head coach being a driving factor for a player to sign. Despite not necessarily designating himself as a winning head coach just yet, as a former player, he still carries some level of clout among current players.
Regardless, Wright hit the nail on the head when he said he's looking to prove himself again.
Before last season with the Chicago Bears, the former Dallas Cowboys draft pick had only three starts in four years as a pro.
This past season is when he broke out, starting 16 games and recording five interceptions, forcing two fumbles, and breaking up 11 passes.
As previously mentioned, there are people around the league who aren't sure if Wright can maintain that high level of play, which is why he signed that one-year deal with little guaranteed money.
In New York, he's going to have the opportunity to prove himself, and maybe after a great season, he'll be able to cash in with the Jets in 2027.
