New York Jets running back Breece Hall has been at the center of trade speculation for months, dating back to the 2025 NFL Draft. For a time, it even seemed like his days in green and white were numbered.
The Jets were reportedly fielding trade offers for Hall, and after a disappointing 2024 season, many began to brace for the possibility that the team would move on from him at some point this year.
But the tide seems to be turning on the Hall trade front. ESPN's Rich Cimini reported on Thursday that, based on what he's heard, he'd be "surprised" if the Jets traded their star running back.
This aligns with other reports as well. Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer reported on Friday that, at this point, the Jets aren't expected to trade Hall for anything less than a Day 2 pick. Unless the Jets receive a sizable offer from another team, Hall seems likely to remain in New York.
Jets seem unlikely to trade Breece Hall ahead of the deadline
Hall's future with the Jets has been a talking point since the weeks leading up to the draft back in April. Reports confirmed that the Jets did have at least preliminary conversations with teams about a potential Hall trade before ultimately deciding against it.
Instead, Hall has returned in 2025 as one of the focal points of the Jets’ offense, and his performance has looked much more like his 2023 form than the disappointment of last season.
Hall has carried the ball 117 times for 581 yards and two touchdowns in eight games this season, averaging a stellar 5.0 yards per carry. He's on pace for a career-high 1,235 rushing yards and 378 receiving yards.
Hall has been the beneficiary of some excellent Jets run-blocking and a much-improved run scheme, but he's also been excellent independent of his situation. He ranks top eight in the NFL in total rushing yards over expected this season.
His strong play this season, coupled with an untimely injury to Braelon Allen, appears to have changed the Jets’ stance on Hall’s future. Breer noted that there was likely a time this summer when Hall could’ve been acquired for a fourth-round pick, but that ship seems to have sailed.
The Jets’ reluctance to trade Hall suggests they plan to keep him beyond this season. Hall is set to become a free agent at year’s end, but if the team isn’t exploring a move before the deadline, it’s reasonable to assume they’ll look to work out an extension instead.
The team could also turn to the franchise tag or even the seldom-used transition tag if a long-term deal isn’t reached. Hall’s contract situation will be one of the more intriguing storylines to monitor if he ultimately remains with the Jets past the deadline.
All signs now point to the Jets keeping Hall, which is certainly a notable shift in tone from just a few weeks ago, when his future in Florham Park seemed anything but certain.
