While New York Jets fans have to sit through what will likely be yet another brutal season following a 2-6 start, fans can be excited about the young talent already on this team and the prospect of Darren Mougey using three first-round picks in the much-hyped 2027 NFL Draft.
The Jets own the Indianapolis Colts' first-round pick and whichever of the Dallas Cowboys' and Green Bay Packers' selections is worse (likely the Cowboys, based on Week 8). After both Dallas and Indianapolis suffered their worst losses of the season, things are looking up for Mougey and the Jets.
If the season ended today, the Jets would own Indianapolis' No. 4 overall pick via the Sauce Gardner trade, the No. 6 overall selection due to their own poor performance, and Dallas' No. 10 choice thanks to the Quinnen Williams swap. There's a non-zero chance that the results hold and all of those picks finish the season in the Top 10.
New York Jets own three Top-10 picks in 2027 NFL Draft after Week 8
The Jets' losses to the Miami Dolphins and Las Vegas Raiders, respectively, were seen by many as two of their more likely wins on the 2026 schedule in the preseason. With the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills on tap in the next two weeks, it seems more likely than not that the Jets will fall to 2-8 on the season.
Dallas is a weird one. In a year where the Eagles and Commanders have spontaneously combusted, the Cowboys should have waltzed to a division title. Instead, their lackluster defense has choked big lead after big lead. The terms of the Williams deal mean that Dallas will still get Green Bay's first-round pick, but that is currently 10 spots lower than their original selection.
Indianapolis' 42-7 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, in which Liam Coen pulled his starters in the fourth quarter, makes them look like a team that is ready to simulate to next offseason. Chris Ballard has been fired, Shane Steichen is next, and the Sauce Gardner trade may send the Jets one of the best picks in the draft.
The New York Jets could revitalize their defense in the 2027 NFL Draft
The Jets need a young franchise quarterback above all else, and they are all but neck-and-neck with the Dolphins in the race for names like Drew Mestemaker and CJ Carr. Beyond that, it would not be an exaggeration to suggest that every other premium Jets pick needs to be used on the defensive side of the ball.
The Jets need two more pass rushers to team with 2026 No. 2 pick David Bailey, a defensive tackle who can supplement T'Vondre Sweat and rookie Darrell Jackson Jr. in defending the run, and a true No. 1 cornerback. Perhaps a linebacker who could eventually take the mantle away from Demario Davis in the future?
The Jets may be in for some more short-term pain, but the fans looking to the horizon actually have something worth building on if Mougey really does have the goods.
