Latest practice updates

Updates from Monday, August 17

  • Running back Breece Hall exited practice early with an apparent groin injury. Hall hauled in a swing pass from QB Geno Smith before pulling up, untouched, and falling to the ground. Aaron Glenn told reporters after practice that Hall suffered a strained groin and the initial belief is that it's not "a big deal." Hall will undergo further testing and could miss the remainder of the preseason, but it doesn't sound like he's in danger of missing regular-season time.
  • Smith practiced with a small sleeve on his lower left leg as he continues to nurse the "sore ankle" that held him out of Friday's preseason opener. The veteran QB was notably walking with a slight limp on occasion and overthrew his intended receiver (Isaiah Williams) for an Andre Cisco interception in a two-minute drill.
  • Fan-favorite cornerback and preseason star CB Mory Bamba did not practice and was spotted in the rehab area with a brace on his right knee. Glenn told reporters that Bamba will be out for a couple of weeks. Fellow cornerbacks Qwan'tez Stiggers (concussion) and Nahshon Wright (hip) also did not practice. Backup linebacker Mykal Walker was also unavailable due to a calf injury.
  • Garrett Wilson did not practice due to a stomach bug. Minkah Fitzpatrick and Demario Davis were both held out and given veteran rest days.
  • In positive injury news, both DT T'Vondre Sweat (hamstring) and OLB Joseph Ossai (undisclosed) returned to practice and participated in team drills. CB D'Angelo Ponds (calf) and TE Kenyon Sadiq (hernia surgery) remain sidelined.
  • Jason Sanders has likely taken the lead again in the kicker battle. Sanders made 7 of his 8 field-goal attempts, with his only miss coming from 54 yards. Cade York went just 5-of-8, with misses from 48, 51, and 54.
  • Rookie QB Cade Klubnik ended a sloppy, rainy practice with a 20-yard touchdown to Quincy Skinner Jr. on the final play of the day. Skinner bobbled the pass before ultimately coming down with it in the back of the end zone. There were a lot of defensive penalties in Monday's practice.

Updates from Wednesday, August 12

  • Geno Smith and the Jets' offense had a bit of a bounce-back performance on Tuesday, and while the Bucs probably still "won the day," Smith was much more accurate and efficient. This was certainly a more even practice than Tuesday's.
  • Smith completed 10-of-17 passes with a touchdown to Mason Taylor on a 3rd-and-goal (from the 5-yard line) slant in red-zone drills. Smith had also hit Taylor for a big third-down conversion earlier in the same series. This was a productive day for the second-year tight end. Smith also didn't turn the ball over in today's practice.
  • The highlight of the day for the Jets' offense came when rookie Cade Klubnik dropped a dime into the arms of WR Arian Smith, who hauled in a 50-yard touchdown in 11-on-11. Smith made a nice adjustment and made the grab with a defender draped all over him. Klubnik did, however, throw an interception right to a Bucs safety on a deep ball a few plays later.
  • Backup WR Jamaal Pritchett had a bad drop on another Klubnik deep ball later in practice for what could have been a big gain.
  • David Bailey once again dominated the early portion of practice, recording multiple sacks of Baker Mayfield in 11-on-11. The Bucs made it a point of emphasis to get the ball out quicker as practice progressed, which limited Bailey's production in the second half of the day.
  • Bucs rookie edge rusher Rueben Bain Jr. won the battle against Armand Membou, who struggled at times for the first time this summer. Membou got the better of Bain in Tuesday's practice, but not on Wednesday.
  • Two more fights broke out at Wednesday's practice. The first was a full-on brawl between the Jets' offense and Bucs' defense involving Tim Patrick and Isaiah Williams. The second was instigated by Jets left guard Dylan Parham (TE Jelani Woods was also in the mix). Bucs DT A'Shawn Robinson was even jawing with a Jets coach at one point. It was another testy day.
  • The Jets' offense stalled out in the two-minute drill to end practice. There was a Braelon Allen drop, a Rueben Bain sack (and an Armand Membou hold on the same play), a false start, a couple of incompletions, and a badly shanked 61-yard field goal attempt from Jason Sanders. The only positives were an 11-yard completion to Mason Taylor and a leaping 19-yard grab by Jeremy Ruckert, who Moss'd a Bucs defender.
  • The Bucs found quite a bit more success with their two-minute drill, as Baker Mayfield was able to carve up the Jets' secondary and drive down the field for an easy score. Mayfield went 5-of-6 on the drive, capping it off with a Cade Otton touchdown. Brandon Stephens allowed multiple catches to rookie WR Ted Hurst and was flagged for DPI in the end zone on a pass attempted for Hurst.
  • Backup CB Qwan'tez Stiggers is in concussion protocol after his medical scare at practice yesterday. Aaron Glenn also told reporters that he hopes rookie CB D'Angelo Ponds will be able to do some things next week, but that the Jets aren't going to push him before he's ready.

Updates from Tuesday, August 11

  • The Jets' first joint practice with the Buccaneers didn't go very well for Geno Smith and the offense. While Smith improved throughout the day and finished strong in red-zone drills, he was largely a disaster for the first half of practice.
  • Smith threw two interceptions (one in 11-on-11 and one in 7-on-7) in the first few series of team drills. The first was a pick-six to Damarion Williams on a play where Garrett Wilson fell down. The second was thrown directly to rookie linebacker Josiah Trotter. Smith finished 10-of-16 with a number of errant passes and a pair of sacks. An 18-yard touchdown to Mason Taylor in red-zone drills was his only completion of longer than 10 yards.
  • Garrett Wilson also had a touchdown in the red zone on a pass that was tipped at the line of scrimmage. Wilson came back to catch the ball and was able to juke his way past 3-4 Bucs defenders and into the end zone for the highlight score of the day.
  • Backup cornerback Qwan'tez Stiggers was taken off the field on a stretcher and loaded into an ambulance toward the end of practice. Aaron Glenn told reporters after practice that Stiggers came to the sideline after a play and passed out. He was conscious and able to talk before being taken to the hospital. Glenn told reporters that "for the most part, he's good."
  • Tensions flared at practice, with as many as four different fights breaking out throughout the day. David Bailey and Bucs right tackle Luke Goedeke exchanged punches after the rookie beat the veteran tackle around the edge on a previous play. Bailey and Goedeke were involved in another scuffle later on that ended with the latter tossing Qwan'tez Stiggers' helmet into the air.
  • Armand Membou got in on the action, brawling with the Bucs' defense following a Mason Taylor touchdown. The Jets pulled Membou shortly after and replaced him with Chukwuma Okorafor. Later on, rookie Darrell Jackson Jr. attempted to start a fight with "half the Bucs offense," per ESPN's Rich Cimini. To say this was a chippy practice would be an understatement.
  • In positive news, Bailey was probably the best player on the field for the Jets on Tuesday. Bailey recorded multiple sacks against a Tristan Wirfs-less Bucs offensive line, notably getting the better of a rock-solid right tackle in the aforementioned Goedeke.
  • Dane Belton appears to have passed Andre Cisco in the battle for the Jets' second safety job opposite Minkah Fitzpatrick. Belton continued his strong summer on Tuesday with a highlight-reel tackle for loss. On the very next play, Cisco was burned by Emeka Egbuka for a touchdown. Malachi Moore remains a distant third in the position battle, however.

Updates from Saturday, August 8

  • The Jets participated in a simulated scrimmage on Saturday, and while Geno Smith and the first-team offense got off to a good start, the defense ultimately won the day.
  • Smith finished 12-of-20 for 157 yards and a 36-yard touchdown to Isaiah Williams, capping a four-play 65-yard opening drive for the offense. But after a 3-for-3 start, Smith finished 9-of-17 with a number of ugly-looking offensive series.
  • Isaiah Williams was the star of the day, however. Williams was the Jets' leading receiver, finishing practice with a 66-yard touchdown on a beauty of a throw by rookie QB Cade Klubnik. Williams has put together an outstanding summer for the Jets.
  • Klubnik also threw touchdowns to tight end Jelani Woods and wide receiver Jamaal Pritchett, the latter of which was set up by another long Williams gain. His first pass of the day, though, was an interception by safety Dane Belton on a pass broken up by backup nickel CB Jordan Clark. Klubnik completed 10-of-14 passes for 154 yards.
  • Bailey Zappe had a long touchdown of his own, a 42-yarder to second-year wide receiver Quincy Skinner Jr.
  • The Jets' offensive line had its worst day of the summer, accounting for more than a few false start penalties and miscues. Olu Fashanu was called for a holding penalty and allowed a David Bailey sack earlier in the morning.
  • Bailey limped off toward the end of practice with an ankle injury, but Aaron Glenn didn't sound concerned when asked about it by reporters. Bailey was spotted walking on the sideline without a noticeable limp.
  • Rookie safety VJ Payne will miss the next 3-4 weeks due to a bone bruise.

Updates from Friday, August 7

  • The Jets had a light, padless day of practice on Friday, primarily working on third-and-long situations. As a result, there weren't a ton of takeaways or notable plays.
  • The most promising development was the continued chemistry between Geno Smith and Garrett Wilson. Smith completed 8-of-12 passes in live periods — he was 5-of-5 throwing to Wilson and 3-of-7 throwing to everyone else.
  • Cade Klubnik finished 6-of-10 in a bit of a bounce-back from Thursday's practice, although he did have a near-interception on a pass over the middle of the field in team drills that was only saved by high ball placement.
  • Backup linebacker Mykal Walker recorded an interception for the second consecutive practice, this time picking off Bailey Zappe on a pass that was late over the middle of the field.
  • Dane Belton had a nice pass breakup on a ball intended for rookie wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr. Belton continues to push Andre Cisco for a starting job in the Jets' secondary. Malachi Moore appears to be firmly the fourth safety on the Jets' depth chart.
  • Minkah Fitzpatrick, Demario Davis, and Harrison Phillips were all given veteran rest days and did not practice.

Updates from Thursday, August 6

  • Geno Smith put together one of his best practices of the summer. No specific completion numbers today because the Jets worked primarily on red-zone drills, but Smith was deadly accurate near the goal line, leading to touchdowns for Garrett Wilson, Adonai Mitchell, and Omar Cooper Jr.
  • The same can't be said about Cade Klubnik, who had arguably his worst practice of camp. Klubnik started 1-of-5 in the first set of red-zone 11-on-11 drills, including an interception that was thrown right into the hands of backup LB Mykal Walker. It was probably the Jets' ugliest offensive play of the summer.
  • The Jets' offensive line was excellent for much of the day, consistently opening up holes in the running game and keeping Smith upright. Armand Membou was his usual dominant self, but the likes of Joe Tippmann and Josh Myers also had their moments in practice.
  • David Bailey was inconsistent in run defense, but he did manage to record a sack on Smith. The very next play, Bailey got around Olu Fashanu, forcing Smith to throw the ball at the ground and eat the play. Bailey has been the Jets' best pass rusher this summer.
  • The Jets' kickers had their worst day of training camp to date, with Jason Sanders making 6-of-9 of his field goals, with misses from 47, 51, and 52 yards out, while Cade York went 6-of-8, with misses from 52 and 53.
  • On the injury front, running back Isaiah Davis didn't practice due to a knee injury and is expected to miss "a couple of weeks." Edge rusher Kingsley Enagbare was held out again with an ankle injury and is considered day-to-day.
  • Cornerback Nahshon Wright is dealing with a hip strain but will be "just fine," according to Aaron Glenn. Rookie cornerback D'Angelo Ponds (calf) is nearing a return and could be back by next week. Tight end Kenyon Sadiq (hernia surgery) will be out a few weeks, but Glenn reiterated that the Jets expect him back before Week 1.

Updates from Tuesday, August 4

  • The Jets' offense bounced back after a rainy Monday morning practice the day prior, with both Geno Smith and Cade Klubnik accounting for some highlight-worthy plays.
  • Smith finished 7-of-12 in 11-on-11 with an interception (Brandon Stephens) and 2-of-3 in 7-on-7. Highlights included a gorgeous 15-20-yard Garrett Wilson toe-tapping sideline completion on a back-shoulder throw and a beautiful 30+ yard deep ball to Isaiah Williams, who slid to make the grab.
  • Klubnik completed 6-of-10 passes in 11-on-11 and 3-of-3 in 7-on-7. The rookie QB had one of his best practices of the summer, finding Isaiah Williams downfield for a big gain in 7-on-7 on one play and looking calm and composed in the face of pressure most of the day. Today was a good day for Klubnik.
  • Backup tight end Jeremy Ruckert took advantage of extra reps with Kenyon Sadiq still sidelined (maintenance program), hauling in a team-best four catches. Aaron Glenn told reporters after practice that Sadiq suffered "a little setback" and will "be out for a little bit." Glenn also insisted that the Jets are fully confident the rookie tight end will be ready for Week 1.
  • Breece Hall and Braelon Allen each had a couple of long runs, as the Jets' offensive line won the day. Armand Membou was perhaps the best player on the field once again, dominating and winning essentially every rep. Membou has possibly been the Jets' best player this summer and hasn't really been beaten with pads on to this point.
  • It was another excellent day for Brandon Stephens, who continued his strong start to the summer by recording an interception on a Jamien Sherwood-tipped pass intended for Mason Taylor. Rookie Azareye'h Thomas also nearly picked off Smith and more than held his own when matched up with Garrett Wilson.
  • Second-year linebacker Kiko Mauigoa forced a fumble following an Omar Cooper Jr. catch-and-run on a screen pass. Mauigoa appears to be working as the Jets' third linebacker this summer.
  • The Jets' kickers continued their excellent start to camp on Tuesday. Cade York made seven of his eight field goal attempts, with his only miss coming from 60 yards out. Jason Sanders made all eight of his attempts, including a 60-yarder with room to spare.
  • Rookie Darrell Jackson Jr. has quietly had a strong start to the summer, winning most of his 1-on-1 reps on Tuesday and playing well in team drills. Jackson has taken advantage of the extra reps with T'Vondre Sweat sidelined.

Updates from Monday, August 3

  • The Jets practiced with pads for the first time this summer on Monday, and the defense unsurprisingly won the day. The offense struggled to get much going in the rainy conditions, as the Jets' secondary had its best practice of training camp to this point.
  • Geno Smith finished 1-of-4 with an interception (his first of camp) and a Garrett Wilson drop in 11-on-11 and completed 2-of-4 passes in 7-on-7. The Jets, as a team, dropped a whopping eight passes on Monday, as the rainy conditions proved to be challenging.
  • Smith and Omar Cooper Jr. connected for what was the offense's best play of the day, an impressive sideline deep ball in 7-on-7 that got the better of safety Andre Cisco.
  • Backup tight end Jelani Woods had an active day, hauling in three passes on four targets with Kenyon Sadiq sidelined. Woods made some plays in the spring and has history with Frank Reich dating back to their days together in Indianapolis.
  • Cade Klubnik fared slightly better, completing 4-of-6 passes in 11-on-11 and 4-of-6 in 7-on-7, although he was notably still late on a few throws. These are important reps for the rookie quarterback.
  • Minkah Fitzpatrick made the play of the day, intercepting an errant Geno Smith pass that was intended for Adonai Mitchell. Demario Davis dropped into a deep zone, forcing Smith to try to fit the pass in high over the defender, but the wet ball got away from him and sailed into Fitzpatrick's hands.
  • It was a productive day for the Jets' cornerbacks, as Brandon Stephens mostly shut down Garrett Wilson, while both Azareye'h Thomas and Nahson Wright recorded PBUs. D'Angelo Ponds remains out with a calf injury and is unlikely to return to practice this week, per Aaron Glenn.
  • Armand Membou once again got the better of David Bailey in Monday's practice, although Bailey did force a holding penalty after beating Olu Fashanu inside on a spin move in 1-on-1 drills.
  • Rookie tight end Kenyon Sadiq was absent from Monday's practice as he continues to work his way back from hernia surgery. Glenn told reporters after practice that Sadiq is on a maintenance program, so today was just a rest day.
  • Ponds, T'Vondre Sweat (hamstring), and Joseph Ossai (undisclosed) remain sidelined and are not expected to return to practice this week, per Glenn. It sounds like there's a good chance they could return in time for the start of the preseason, however.

Updates from Saturday, August 1

  • Geno Smith was the star of Saturday's practice, finishing a perfect 11-of-11 with three touchdowns in 11-on-11 drills and 4-of-4 with a touchdown to rookie WR Omar Cooper Jr. in 7-on-7. Garrett Wilson and Adonai Mitchell both had big days, as not a single pass from Smith hit the ground during practice.
  • This was the best we've seen of the Geno Smith-Garrett Wilson connection, with the Ohio State product hauling in six receptions throughout practice. That included a gorgeous touch pass in the corner of the end zone that Wilson hauled in for the Jets' first touchdown of camp.
  • Not to be outdone by his position-mate, Adonai Mitchell also had a strong day. Mitchell continued to build on his chemistry with Smith, hauling in multiple grabs, including a 25-yard pitch-and-catch touchdown on a go route with Brandon Stephens in coverage. That might have been the best throw by a Jets quarterback all summer to this point.
  • Cade Klubnik started off well but finished poorly, throwing a pair of interceptions to finish 6-of-10 in 11-on-11. Klubnik was late on a couple of reads, leading to a Qwan'tez Stiggers interception on an out-breaker and a Jordan Clark PBU on a pass intended for Arian Smith. The rookie QB was later picked off again by backup LB Marcelino McCrary-Ball in the red zone. An uneven day for the Jets' first-year signal-caller.
  • Both Jets kickers had strong days of practice again, with Jason Sanders finishing 7-of-8 and Cade York connecting on 6 of his 7 field goal attempts. Sanders missed off the right upright from 55 but connected on field goals from 55 and 60 yards out. York's only miss was from around 52 yards.
  • Armand Membou got the better of his matchup with David Bailey on Saturday after the rookie dominated practice this past Thursday. Bailey had a much quieter morning this time around.
  • Xavier Newman worked as the second-team center and had some issues with his snaps, including a couple to Klubnik that he dirted. Newman is not a natural center — this is something that bears monitoring this summer.

Updates from Thursday, July 30

  • David Bailey stole the show with a dominant breakout performance. The rookie No. 2 overall pick notched three "sacks" (remember, no pads) and was the best player on the field for the Jets.
  • Bailey also made a number of plays against the run, including a TFL on an Omar Cooper Jr. end around and another TFL that saw him toss backup TE Jelani Woods to the ground. His speed and high motor were on full display on Thursday. This was a Carl Lawson-esque training camp performance from the rookie edge rusher.
  • Geno Smith finished 3-of-4 in 11-on-11 and 3-of-4 in 7-on-7, with a couple of nice throws to Adonai Mitchell. Mitchell and Smith continued to build upon the chemistry they established in the spring. Smith also found Garrett Wilson on a sideline comeback route in 7-on-7, beating Brandon Stephens, who was in coverage.
  • Cade Klubnik had his best practice of the summer (small sample size, but still), completing 6-of-7 passes in 11-on-11 and 3-of-4 in 7-on-7. The rookie found WR Arian Smith downfield on an intermediate out-breaker in what was likely his best throw of the day. Smith, to his credit, made an excellent play on the ball.
  • Klubnik also completed a downfield pass to WR Jamaal Pritchett and should have had another intermediate completion on a throw to rookie TE Kenyon Sadiq, but the ball bounced off his chest and was dropped.
  • Kingsley Enagbare was perhaps overshadowed by Bailey's dominance, but the veteran edge rusher also had a productive day, recording a sack. Both Armand Membou and Olu Fashanu had their struggles today, although, again, it should be noted that the pads haven't come on yet. Padless practices tend to favor the defensive line.
  • Kicker update: Cade York went a perfect 6-of-6 making kicks from 34, 36, 39, 41, 44, and 47, while Jason Sanders went 5-of-6, missing from 47.

Updates from Wednesday, July 29

  • Geno Smith completed 3-of-6 passes in 11-on-11 drills and 4-of-5 passes in 7-on-7 work, including an underthrown deep ball to Adonai Mitchell that was broken up by Brandon Stephens.
  • Rookie Cade Klubnik finished 2-of-4 in 11-on-11 and 3-of-4 in 7-on-7. He attempted a tight-window throw to UDFA wide receiver Malik McClain in 11-on-11 that was tipped and intercepted by backup linebacker Mykal Walker.
  • Klubnik's best throw of the day came when he uncorked a beauty of a deep ball to Arian Smith in 7-on-7, only for the ball to bounce off the second-year wide receiver's hands and fall incomplete.

  • No. 2 overall pick David Bailey made a couple of nice plays as the backside edge defender, including a pressure on Smith in 11-on-11 that forced an incompletion. It should be noted that players are still practicing without pads in the early stages of training camp.
  • D'Angelo Ponds strained his calf during practice, but head coach Aaron Glenn told reporters that it isn't serious and insisted that the rookie cornerback won't miss much time. Backup defensive tackle Mazi Smith also sustained a hamstring injury.

Top lessons learned from Jets training camp so far

Cade Klubnik QB2?

The Jets are expected to give rookie Cade Klubnik every opportunity to win the backup quarterback job this summer. He'll have to beat out Bailey Zappe, Brady Cook, and the hypothetical version of any veteran the team might add, but ESPN’s Rich Cimini has reported that the Jets would prefer Klubnik to open the season as Geno Smith’s backup if he proves he is ready in training camp.

Don't sleep on Isaiah Davis

Isaiah Davis shouldn't be overlooked in the Jets’ RB2 competition. ESPN’s Rich Cimini also reported that the coaching staff remains very high on Davis after what he showed last season, and Braelon Allen is far from a lock to win the job behind Breece Hall. "Don't sleep on Isaiah Davis," per Cimini.

Injury updates

DT T'Vondre Sweat

Nose tackle T'Vondre Sweat is dealing with a hamstring injury and was placed on the NFI list to start training camp. The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt is reporting that the injury is "not considered serious" and the expectation is that Sweat will be back on the field soon enough.

Sweat is not expected back at practice this week but has a chance to return before the preseason opener on August 14.

EDGE Joseph Ossai

The Jets placed veteran edge rusher Joseph Ossai on the PUP list on Tuesday, removing wide receiver Tim Patrick from the list in a corresponding move. SNY's Connor Hughes is reporting that Ossai's stint on the PUP list "shouldn’t be long," as he's reportedly "working through something minor."

Ossai is not expected back at practice this week but has a chance to return before the preseason opener on August 14.

EDGE Tyler Baron

Tyler Baron was also added to the PUP list to start training camp and is likely still recovering from a serious knee injury that ended his rookie season prematurely last December. Baron could be a candidate for the injured reserve depending on his progress this summer.

CB D'Angelo Ponds

D'Angelo Ponds suffered a calf strain in Wednesday's practice, although early indications are that it's nothing serious. Aaron Glenn told reporters that he's not overly concerned and that Ponds should be back on the field before long.

Ponds is not expected back at practice this week but has a chance to return before the preseason opener on August 14.
