One of the most exciting selections of the New York Jets' 2026 NFL Draft class was Indiana defensive back D'Angelo Ponds, the defensive MVP of both the Peach Bowl and Rose Bowl.
Despite standing at 5-foot-9, Ponds plays much bigger than his official size. Just ask the national champion Indiana Hoosiers, who relied on his football IQ and ability on the field, and how he contributed to their magical title-winning run.
He bears a striking resemblance (strictly on the football field) to head coach Aaron Glenn, who was an undersized defensive back himself throughout his 15 seasons in the NFL.
Unfortunately, Ponds' training camp debut will have to wait just a little bit longer, as Glenn revealed ahead of the first official practice that the rookie defensive back will sit out after suffering a strained calf.

The Athletic's Zach Rosenblatt shared from Glenn's press conference on Tuesday morning that Ponds' injury is a minor one, and the Jets head coach stressed that "he'll be fine."
Despite being a rookie, it's important that Ponds rests up and gets healthy. He may just end up playing a key role for the Jets' defense in his first season as a pro.
Due to his size, the second-round draft pick is likely never going to be a regular outside cornerback. Instead, he'll probably find his sweet spot playing in the slot, serving as the Jets' primary defender at nickel.
It's no secret the Jets are looking for better production out of their secondary than they did in 2025. They failed to record a single interception and were around the middle of the pack in passing yards given up per game.
Ponds should help remedy that. At Indiana last year, he recorded a Pro Football Focus coverage grade of 89.6, ranked seventh-best among collegiate cornerbacks.
In the meantime, cornerback Jarvis Brownlee Jr. will likely fill in for the injured Ponds. The midseason trade acquisition isn't as talented in coverage, but makes up for it with his ability to tackle and staunch run defense.
Still, Jets fans will be hoping for a speedy recovery for Ponds. He'll hopefully be one of the young building blocks that start pushing this rebuild in the right direction.
