The New York Jets have been without star wide receiver Garrett Wilson for the past two games as he recovers from a knee injury. Wilson suffered a sprain in the team’s Week 6 loss to the Denver Broncos and has now been sidelined for nearly a month.
But the team received a bit of good news coming out of their bye week, as head coach Aaron Glenn revealed to reporters on Monday that Wilson is expected to return to practice at some point this week.
Wilson has not participated in a practice since injuring his knee a few weeks ago and has been listed as doubtful for each of the Jets' last two games. His expected return to practice should be a strong indication that he will be able to suit up for the team's Week 10 game against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.
The Jets are fresh off their first win of the season, a thrilling 39-38 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in a game the team's offense managed to put up nearly 40 points without their star wideout. Wilson's return should provide a major boost to a receiving corps that desperately needs healthy bodies.
Garrett Wilson injury update is great news for the Jets' offense
Wilson was on pace for career-best numbers prior to his injury. The former Ohio State star has hauled in 36 catches for 395 yards and four touchdowns in six games this season and is still on pace for a career high in receiving touchdowns.
The Jets' offense has struggled to find traction in the passing game throughout the season, even with Wilson. But given the state of the team’s wide receiver room at the moment, it’s safe to say his return will provide a much-needed boost to an offense desperate for playmaking help.
The Jets placed veteran Josh Reynolds on the injured reserve last week, sidelining him for the team's next four games. The only other healthy wide receivers on the roster in Week 8 were Tyler Johnson, Allen Lazard, Arian Smith, Isaiah Williams, and Brandon Smith, who has since reverted to the practice squad.
The team also added former Houston Texans second-round pick John Metchie in a trade that sent Michael Carter II to the Philadelphia Eagles last week. Still, there's no replacing Wilson.
If all goes well in practice this week, Jets fans could finally see their top receiver back on the field sooner rather than later.
