The New York Jets' offensive performance in Week 6 was brutally unwatchable, among the worst displays in recent NFL memory. Justin Fields looked overwhelmed and lost as the offense failed to generate any meaningful momentum in their ugly 13-11 loss to the Denver Broncos
And yet, somehow, someway, the football gods made sure to remind the Jets after the game that it can always be worse. Always.
Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson reportedly suffered a knee injury in the team's London loss and is scheduled to undergo an MRI to determine the severity. The belief at this time is that it's not ACL-related, but Wilson was visibly upset when speaking to reporters after the game.
Wilson insisted that he was still "trying to wait for the [results] to come back" and that it was "really messing with [his] mental." It's hard to imagine a worse offensive performance than what the Jets put on tape this Sunday, but losing Wilson is certainly one way to make it happen.
Jets' offense could be fully cooked after Garrett Wilson injury
Wilson finished Sunday's game with a team-best three catches for just 13 yards. It was the first time Wilson had failed to reach at least 50 yards in a game this season, although it's nearly impossible to place any of the blame on the star wide receiver.
Fields was completely unplayable in every aspect throughout the game, to the point where the Jets couldn’t trust him to make a single post-snap decision without taking a sack. The situation was untenable for the entire offense, Wilson included.
While Fields hasn't been quite that bad for most of the season, the Jets' offense has still struggled to find any consistency. Wilson has been one of the lone bright spots and is on pace for a career year.
The former Ohio State star has hauled in 36 catches for 395 yards and four touchdowns through six weeks and entered Sunday's game as the AFC leader in receiving. He's found ways to produce even in spite of the Jets' offensive ineptitude.
Jets fans would shudder to think of the state of the team's wide receiver room if Wilson were forced to miss any time. Veterans Josh Reynolds, Tyler Johnson, and Allen Lazard would see an uptick in snaps, although the latter's future in New York remains uncertain after he missed Week 6 due to a "personal" issue.
Rookie Arian Smith would also likely become a larger part of the Jets' gameplan, but there is no replacing Wilson. In fact, all non-Wilson wide receivers on the Jets' roster have combined for just 20 catches through six games. Wilson has nearly double that by himself.
The Jets will await further word of the severity of Wilson's injury, and it's safe to say that everyone at One Jets Drive is holding their breath. Imagine what this offense would look like without Garrett Wilson.
