The New York Jets have been dealing with injuries all season long, and no position has been hit harder than wide receiver. It started with Omar Cooper Jr. and Adonai Mitchell at the start of the year, and now Garrett Wilson is dealing with a new injury as well.
Head coach Aaron Glenn revealed on Wednesday that Wilson is currently in concussion protocol, putting his status in jeopardy for the Jets' Week 9 matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs.
"Garrett, he's in a concussion protocol. He'll be day-to-day. Harrison Phillips, he has an ankle. He'll be day-to-day. These guys here will be limited, and they're trending in the right direction. Breece Hall, Mason Taylor, Joe Ossai, David Bailey."
Clearly, Wilson didn't come out of the Las Vegas Raiders game unscathed and took a few too many hits in one of his more productive games in recent weeks. His absence will be a tough blow when New York travels to Kansas City.
Major opportunity for New York Jets WRs Adonai Mitchell and Omar Cooper Jr.
Wilson will have the next few days to get healthy and work his way back in time for Week 9, but concussions are tricky. The recovery time varies for each player.
But if he can't go, it will be the Mitchell and Cooper show for the Jets offense, and that's an exciting prospect in its own right.
Mitchell is coming off one of the best games of his young career, hauling in seven passes for 142 yards and one touchdown. He's clearly one of Geno Smith's favorite targets in the passing game.
Cooper, on the other hand, did not catch a pass against the Raiders, but in two games before that, he had 100 receiving yards and a touchdown in both outings. It was the first time in NFL history that any player had done that in his first three games.
Other New York Jets injury notes
While Wilson's status is in doubt for Sunday, Glenn did sound positive when it came to Hall, who hasn't played for the Jets since Week 3. It will be interesting to watch and see how New York deploys their two-headed backfield of Braelon Allen and Hall in the backfield.
Even more encouraging, No. 2 overall pick David Bailey seems to be trending in the right direction after missing the first game of his career this past weekend. The Jets will need him if they hope to put any sort of pressure on Patrick Mahomes.
