Frank Reich's take on 'bell cow' Breece Hall will infuriate Jets fans

Is this a real quote?

The New York Jets have seen Braelon Allen go from a milquetoast backup to a dominant sledgehammer after filling in for an injured Breece Hall in the 2026 season. However, with Hall returning from injury, the Jets are faced with a dilemma. Do they lean on the veteran who signed a three-year contract extension in Hall, or ride the younger hot hand in Allen?

Based on comments from offensive coordinator Frank Reich, it seems like the Jets will lean on Hall as the main man in the backfield. Reich called the issue a "great problem to have" when discussing the two backs, but he also deemed Hall the "bell cow" and "our guy."

Reich did mention that he will seemingly rotate the backs based on an "in-game, feel thing," but that answer is not going to satisfy Jets fans who want to see No. 0 take over for someone who has lost a little bit of shine in the eyes of the fanbase.

This decision comes at a time when Hall has once again found himself in trade rumors despite signing his extension in the offseason. With the deal being structured in a way that allows the Jets to possibly move off him, the Jets will need to decide once and for all whether Allen has the ability to be a starting running back in the NFL.

Hall, who topped 1,350 yards from scrimmage in each of the last three seasons, has just 163 yards rushing on 3.2 yards per carry this season. His 4.3 yards per touch from scrimmage is the lowest mark of his career, and he doesn't have a run longer than 14 yards all season.

Allen is not only averaging 5.0 yards per carry this season, but if his pace since Hall's injury were extrapolated out to a full season, he would rush for over 1,800 yards.

Will the New York Jets move on from Breece Hall in favor of Braelon Allen?

Going with Allen makes sense. Hall's pass-catching still complements what the ex-Wisconsin star brings to the table; Allen's numbers without Hall have been at or near the top of the league in basically every category that matters, and Hall hasn't been the player he was early in his career.

However, the Jets paid Hall a ton of money, and it may not be wise to abandon him wholesale after one bad month of games and an injury. Given Hall's history of stoking trade fires in the past, it may not be easy to relegate such a big investment to a backup role. This isn't Madden, and emotions will come into play. Allen's numbers also came against some of the worst run defenses in the league.

Reich has done a solid job of moving the ball in the last few weeks, but after the team's lackluster start to the season, it seems hard to believe that this coaching staff will find the right balance between the two. If Allen is relegated to the bench in favor of Hall, what were the last few weeks for?
