Anyone who voluntarily decided to become a New York Jets fan learned a long time ago that, in the end, nothing that happens to this franchise should surprise anyone.
Don’t believe me? This is the same organization that hired Adam Gase almost immediately after the Dolphins realized they’d seen enough of him.
Still skeptical? Remind me how Aaron Rodgers’ Jets debut turned out.
As things stand on April 7, the Jets are widely expected to pick Ohio State edge rusher/linebacker Arvell Reese at No. 2. Nothing is official until the card is handed in, but Reese is the heavy betting favorite to go following presumptive No. 1 pick and future Raiders quarterback Fernando Mendoza.
Of course, I won’t be surprised if the Jets do indeed draft Reese. Then again, I also can’t say that I’d be shocked if the Jets stunned us all and picked Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love.
No, the Jets should not draft Jeremiyah Love
Before I go any further, I want to make it clear that there have not been any credible reports about the Jets selecting Love with the No. 2 pick. They have had breakfast with the Heisman Trophy finalist and the Doak Walker Award winner, but that doesn't mean he's a lock to be New York's first-round selection.
And yet, I truly am prepared for the Jets to make Love the highest-selected running back since the Giants took Saquon Barkley No. 2 in 2018. Who else is ready to hear Jets management defend the pick by touting Love’s talent and game-changing ability?
Never mind the fact that teams should never select a running back that early in the modern NFL, and I personally don’t even think using a top-10 pick on a running back is worth it. The Giants reached the playoffs once in Barkley’s six seasons, the Falcons aren’t exactly close to contending in the Bijan Robinson era, and the Raiders practically allowed opposing defensive linemen to stand next to Ashton Jeanty in the backfield last year.
None of this is to say that I think Reese is guaranteed to be a perennial All-Pro. Well, if he doesn’t go No. 2 to the Jets, he probably will be solely because he won’t be on the Jets.
In all seriousness, I gave up on trying to predict how players will fare. I’m not a scout, and so many of these draft analysts are essentially guessing. No one knows anything.
Barring an unexpected drop, Love will likely go within the first 10 picks. He’s been frequently mocked to the Titans throughout the pre-draft process, though CBS Sports’ Pete Prisco predicted that Love could fall to Washington at No. 7.
If Love goes at No. 2, Jets fans better hope the team traded down and got an established player in the process. Let another rebuilding team be the one to waste a high draft pick on a running back.
