NY Jets complete Davante Adams trade in attempt to salvage season
By Justin Fried
The NY Jets have done it. After over a year and a half of rumors and flirtation, the Jets have finally pulled the trigger on a blockbuster trade for now-former Las Vegas Raiders star wide receiver Davante Adams.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport is reporting that the Jets will send a conditional third-round pick that could become a second-round pick to the Raiders in exchange for the three-time first-team All-Pro wide receiver. The long-anticipated move reunites Adams with Aaron Rodgers, giving the Jets a much-needed offensive weapon to bolster their postseason hopes.
The Jets have seemed like the most likely landing spot for Adams since the 31-year-old requested a trade from the Raiders last week. Other teams such as the New Orleans Saints were interested, but Adams made it clear the Jets were his preferred destination.
This comes one week after the Jets' controversial decision to fire now-former head coach Robert Saleh on Tuesday. When one door closes, another door opens. The Jets are committed to going all-in with this current roster and their new coaching staff.
Davante Adams trade allows NY Jets to reach their ceiling
The Jets entered the 2024 season with legitimate Super Bowl aspirations, largely due to the return of Rodgers. Through five weeks, this has not looked like a team built to compete for a Super Bowl.
While the team's defense has mostly been excellent, the same can't be said for the Jets' offense. Despite a revamped offensive line, a bolstered skill position group, and the return of Rodgers, the Jets currently rank in the bottom half of essentially every offensive category.
Much of the blame falls on the Jets' lackluster offensive coaching staff, but there are other factors at play. Rodgers has struggled to develop chemistry with every receiver not named Allen Lazard.
Adams doesn't fix everything, but he fixes that.
The longtime Green Bay Packers wide receiver can essentially assume Lazard's role in the offense, as a Rodgers chemistry piece who also doubles as the team's best overall playmaker. That's invaluable to a Jets team trying to make a run at the Super Bowl in 2024.
The Jets were never going to reach those heights with their current offense sans Adams. That doesn't mean Adams automatically makes the Jets serious contenders, but he gives them their best shot.
The Jets are a much better football team than they were yesterday. That's because they now have Davante Adams.
