Darren Mougey provides insight into Jets' Cade Klubnik training camp plan

One of the overarching questions that has loomed over the New York Jets this offseason has been their plan at quarterback behind preordained starter Geno Smith.

There was reported interest between the Jets and veteran quarterback Russell Wilson earlier in the summer, but the former Super Bowl champion decided to hang up his cleats and join the broadcasting ranks rather than continue his playing career.

Since then, there hasn't been much movement anywhere else. The Jets went into training camp with fourth-round draft pick Cade Klubnik and veterans Bailey Zappe and Brady Cook as their depth behind Smith.

Given the lack of experience among those three quarterbacks, will the Jets look to make another addition before the start of the season? Are they content with what they've got?

Darren Mougey 'excited' to see what Cade Klubnik does during New York Jets training camp

General manager Darren Mougey made a surprise media appearance this past week at the start of training camp, and he was asked about the team's backup quarterback plan. ESPN's Rich Cimini shared his response.

"On the possibility of adding a veteran backup QB, Mougey says he’s excited to see what Klubnik does with his reps. Adds that he’s always checking out vet markets at all positions."

It seems like the Jets are really intent on Klubnik winning the backup quarterback position, and for good reason. Despite being a rookie, he may just be the most talented signal-caller on the depth chart outside of Geno Smith.

Not only that, but there's hope he can be a long-term plan at quarterback (or at minimum backup quarterback) behind an eventual starter that they draft in 2027.

Regardless, the fact is the Jets don't have many other options outside a few veterans available on the free agent market.

Veteran quarterbacks the New York Jets could turn to in free agency

If the Jets get through a few weeks of training camp and decide that neither Klubnik, Zappe, nor Cook is reliable enough to be QB2, they should check in on the markets of the remaining quarterbacks in free agency.

Jimmy Garoppolo is a name that comes to mind as a seasoned option that could be trusted to start in place of an injured Geno Smith. He's played 13 seasons in the league and has spent the last two years as the backup for the Los Angeles Rams.

But that's only if Klubnik proves he's not ready for the QB2 spot, and that would be a step in the wrong direction for his development.
