Longtime NFL veteran Russell Wilson is calling it a career, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The former Seattle Seahawks quarterback will be joining the broadcast ranks, signing a deal with CBS to join their Sunday kickoff show.
It's an unfortunate update for the New York Jets, who seemed to have a certain level of interest in the 14-year veteran. They hosted him at the team facility in late April, and even reportedly had an offer on the table for Wilson.
Instead, the Super Bowl champion is hanging up his cleats. If the Jets are still looking for a veteran quarterback to back up Geno Smith, they'll have to turn their attention in another direction.
Russell Wilson signs with CBS, leaving Jets without another QB option
Wilson would've been a fine signing for the Jets. Behind Smith, New York doesn't have a lot of experience at the quarterback position.
Bailey Zappe and Brady Cook have a handful of NFL starts under their belts, and rookie fourth-round pick Cade Klubnik obviously has never seen a pro football field.
The Jets haven't seemed too intent on signing a veteran quarterback this offseason. Outside of Wilson, there hasn't been much reported interest in any other signal callers that are out there on the free agent market.
Even Tyrod Taylor, who spent the last two seasons with the Jets, didn't receive much interest from his former team as a free agent. He ended up signing with the Green Bay Packers.
Some players that remain available include longtime San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and Dallas Cowboys quarterback Cooper Rush.
It's possible the Jets feel like they're set at the quarterback position. Smith is the clear-cut starter, of course, and the early returns on Klubnik in training camp have been positive.
But in the worst-case scenario that Smith goes down with an injury, is Aaron Glenn really going to put his faith in a rookie, Zappe, or Cook to keep the ship afloat?
He might, but he's better off getting a player who has proven to be at least a competent starter in the NFL. Say what you want about Wilson, but he at least could've been a starter.
We'll see which direction the Jets go as the summer progresses.
