Cade Klubnik delivers mixed results in first Jets training camp practice

The New York Jets are finally back at training camp, and their first practice took place on July 29th. While Geno Smith is QB1 for this group, the QB2 spot is wide open, and the Jets are giving rookie quarterback Cade Klubnik a real chance to win the backup role.

And in his first practice, the Clemson product had an up-and-down practice session. According to Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic, Klubnik finished Wednesday's practice 2-of-4 during 11 on 11's and 3-of-4 in 7-on-7s. His last throw of practice was intercepted by linebacker Mykal Walker after it was deflected by receiver Malik McClain.

Yet at the same time, Rosenblatt reported Klubnik delivered a beautiful deep pass through traffic to receiver Arian Smith, who dropped it. The young quarterback hit Smith in stride in the ideal spot, and that's what you want to see.

Considering that Klubnik missed time in the spring due to a back injury, this wasn't a bad showing.

Cade Klubnik's first training camp practice was uneven

Seeing the report that he made a beautiful deep pass is great, but everything needs to be taken with a grain of salt. In the same practice, Rosenblatt revealed that Klubnik threw a ball behind Isaiah Williams that fell incomplete before the interception.

The intensity of practice will only increase, and that will give a clearer idea of whether Klubnik can seize the job. Going into camp, Rosenblatt believes that it's his job to lose, yet the door isn't closed on someone else being added.

"As of today, I’d be surprised if Bailey Zappe (who nearly threw a pick on a pass for Sadiq) or Brady Cook wins that job. It’s Klubnik’s to lose for now, though it can’t be ruled out that they add someone else," Rosenblatt wrote.

Considering this was just the first practice in shorts, it'll only get harder from here. Nonetheless, his outing was a mixed bag, which can be looked at in several ways. It's evident that the Jets are giving Klubnik the runway to claim the QB2 role, yet there's no telling what he does with this chance.

There's always room for improvement, and the 22-year-old will look to hone in on those mistakes in Thursday's practice. What he does this summer will be one of the most discussed topics around the Jets. Things were up and down on Wednesday, and that's to be expected. What he does going forward will be interesting to see.
