Cade Klubnik continues uneven performance at Jets training camp

The New York Jets went into training camp somewhat underprepared at the quarterback position. Sure, they have three guys who could all take control of the backup quarterback competition, but none of them seems like they're quite ready to take it and run.

We haven't heard much about Bailey Zappe and Brady Cook, the two backup quarterbacks with the most experience on the roster, but there's been a lot to say about rookie Cade Klubnik.

The Jets clearly want the Clemson product to win the job. From what reporters in attendance share on social media, it seems Klubnik gets the most run with the second team than the other two quarterbacks.

It's led to some up-and-down performances from the fourth-round rookie throughout training camp, and Thursday's practice was the latest example of Klubnik being unable to cement himself as the second-best quarterback on the roster.

It wasn't a great start to the day for Klubnik at Jets practice, as his first pass of the day fell right into the arms of linebacker Mykal Walker, per The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt. "Not even sure who he was targeting," Rosenblatt wrote on X.

Not an ideal note from Thursday's practice, considering as previously mentioned this is supposed to be the Jets plan at quarterback if Geno Smith goes down with an injury at some point this season.

If this keeps up, New York may have no choice but to circle back to the veteran market and see if any of the remaining free agents would be willing to sign with the Jets.

Luckily, it sounded like Klubnik was able to find some positivity towards the end, as Rosenblatt later reported Klubnik's interception streak would come to an end in 7-on-7s thanks to a touchdown pass to Isaiah Williams.

Let's hope Klubnik can keep stacking those plays and start moving further in the right direction.

What QBs could the New York Jets target in free agency?

There isn't a whole lot to choose from on the veteran QB market at this point in the summer, but the remaining free agents may still provide more stability as a backup than anything the Jets have on their roster.

Jimmy Garoppolo still stands out as the best option, and Cooper Rush may be a close second in terms of available players.

Other than that, swinging a trade for Will Levis or Spencer Rattler seems like the best course of action if the Jets feel they're in dire need of an upgrade.
