The New York Jets were considered a likely landing spot for Geno Smith this offseason, and the team made sure that became a reality on Tuesday, trading with the Las Vegas Raiders for the veteran quarterback. Now, Smith is back with the team he started his career with, and the team is excited to welcome him back to New York.
Shortly after the news of the trade broke, Jets running back Braelon Allen took to social media to express his excitement. Allen shared a post in all caps saying, “WE AIN’T WRITE BACK THO,” quoting Smith’s famous statement about how he has found success after being written off. The veteran quarterback will now try to have a more successful stint in New York the second time around.

Smith, drafted by New York in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft, was written off after his first two years in the league. After starting the first 30 games of his career, going 11-18 with the Jets, Smith was eventually benched. He then dealt with numerous injuries and bounced around multiple teams for the next seven years as a backup quarterback before securing another opportunity to start.
Braelon Allen as excited as Jets fans for Geno Smith’s return
The quarterback started for the Seattle Seahawks in 2022, putting together a Pro Bowl season and winning Comeback Player of the Year. That’s when the quarterback dropped the famous line that he was written off, but he never wrote back. He went on to have another Pro Bowl season in 2023 and led Seattle to 10 wins in 2024. After a disastrous season with the Raiders in 2025, Smith is now returning to where his NFL career started.
A lot is different about the Jets from when Smith last played with the team in 2016, but unfortunately, a lot is the same as well. The similarities are that New York is still a struggling franchise trying to figure things out, but the differences are the people who are trying to make things go right.
Aaron Glenn is entering his second season as the team’s head coach, and the franchise has already been investing in the defensive-minded coach’s defense. On offense, Smith will have the opportunity to play with exciting young players like Garrett Wilson, Breece Hall, and Braelon Allen, who’s clearly excited for Smith’s arrival.
