Bears expert believes Jets' Nahshon Wright could have Marcus Peters-like impact

No one can accuse the New York Jets of letting the problems from their 2025 season continue to fester. After laughably failing to record a single interception in the entire campaign, Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey signed a player who defended 11 passes and picked off five last season, in former Chicago Bears starter Nahshon Wright.

Ryan Heckman, part of the brain trust over at Bear Goggles On, believes that Wright's cavalier style of play might be what helps him overtake Azareye'h Thomas and win a starting job. Heckman invoked some former Pro Bowl and All-Pro cornerbacks when describing his impact.

"When I watched Nahshon Wright last season, I saw a lot of what I would call 'Marcus Peters or Trevon Diggs-lite,'" Heckman said. "He seemed to come up with big plays at key times, and that's because he willingly took risks in order to try and jump passes...He was a true boom-or-bust type of player."

Heckman noted that Wright, a former third-round pick of the Dallas Cowboys out of Oregon State, managed to overtake second-rounder Tyrique Stevenson in the eyes of the fanbase due to Stevenson's own struggles. Heckman referred to Wright as "the epitome of the Bears defense" last season, saying that he was a mediocre player who still managed to create turnovers.

The Jets are seemingly banking on the rest of their defense giving Wright enough cushion to play his no-holds-barred style. Veteran impact additions like Demario Davis and Minkah Fitzpatrick will be invaluable to this unit, and another underrated one-year signing in Dane Belton could give this group even more of a floor.

The fact that Wright needed to sign a one-year prove-it deal shows that the rest of the NFL is not buying his breakout campaign as indicative of the type of player he is in his truest form. If Wright can beat out a Day 2 pick like Thomas and provide anything close to his level of play with the Bears, the Jets would chalk that up as a win.

While Wright will assuredly have some busts in coverage that will have Jets fans tearing their own hair out, the Jets are willing to put up with that if it means they can generate some turnovers. Wright is like a baseball player who hits .220 but hits 35 home runs. You put up with some of the lows because the highs are game-changing.
