Aaron Glenn reveals how Russell Wilson news impacts Jets QB plans

Are the Jets still going to look for a vet QB?

The New York Jets quarterback room has one grizzled veteran and a lot of youthful inexperience.

Geno Smith is the clear-cut starter, of course, but the backup quarterback situation remains murky at best. Right now, the Jets are carrying four quarterbacks, including Smith. Rookie fourth-round pick Cade Klubnik, journeyman Bailey Zappe, and 2025 undrafted free agent Brady Cook.

In the disaster scenario that Smith goes down with an injury, would the Jets trust any of those three quarterbacks to step in and operate the offense at a functioning level? Who knows for sure? But it seems they had some doubt, given their interest in veteran Russell Wilson.

The Jets reportedly had an offer on the table for the free agent quarterback before he decided to hang up his cleats and join CBS as a television analyst. Now that the veteran is off the table, will New York continue to examine the market?

Aaron Glenn says Russell Wilson's retirement does not change Jets QB plans

Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn was asked about Wilson's retirement and if the Jets will continue to evaluate the veteran quarterback market.

ESPN's Rich Cimini shared Glenn's response on X.

"Aaron Glenn says Russell Wilson's decision to go into TV has no impact on the Jets' QB plans. Wishes him well, expects him to thrive in that role."

A nice gesture from Glenn to wish Wilson well, but clearly the head coach is still keeping the Jets' plans at quarterback close to the vest.

As of right now, it seems like the Jets are content with letting the QB2 competition play out as is with the guys they have on the roster.

Last week, Glenn told reporters that the quarterback currently taking the most second-team reps was Zappe, the most experienced signal caller on the roster outside of Smith.

There's been plenty of buzz around the rookie, Klubnik, but for now, he seems to still be in the developmental phase of his young career.

If the Jets get to training camp and decide they would like to add another experienced quarterback to the mix, there are still a few options available to them. Longtime Dallas Cowboys backup Cooper Rush is out there, but he doesn't exactly spark excitement.

We'll see how the Jets quarterbacks fare this summer as offseason activities roll along.
