The New York Jets have given their quarterback room a complete and total makeover in 2026, saying goodbye to last year's start Justin Fields, and saying hello to former draft pick and hopeful stabilizing force Geno Smith.
Behind Smith, there's not a whole lot of experience among the Jets' other quarterbacks who are on the roster.
2026 fourth-round pick Cade Klubnik was drafted to be New York's backup, but obviously isn't quite ready to be the Jets' main insurance policy if Smith goes down with injury. After that, it's Bailey Zappe and Brady Cook, who have nine and four starts to their names, respectively.
It's why New York has been in contact with former New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson over the last few weeks, awaiting his decision regarding the continuation of his playing career or if he decides to join the broadcasting ranks.
There's been no other major update on Wilson's side of things since he spoke to the New York Post, but head coach Aaron Glenn provided a brief update when speaking with the press on Friday.
Aaron Glenn downplays need for Russell Wilson despite Jets' QB room
Glenn was asked about the Wilson situation and if he thinks the Jets need to add a veteran quarterback, via The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt.
"Me and Moug (Darren Mougey) are always going to go through a process on how we can improve a team. Sometimes when you do that it becomes a bigger issue than it really is. We're talking to a number of veteran quarterbacks"Aaron Glenn
Glenn also added that he's "happy with our quarterback room," despite the lack of experience behind Smith.
The Jets' head coach can say what he wants publicly, but the fact of the matter is that if Smith goes down with injury in 2026, New York's season is going down with it.
If Klubnik, Zappe, or Cook are forced to start for any stretch next season, it will be incredibly difficult for the Jets to win games, and that doesn't bode well for the job security of Glenn and Mougey.
Adding Wilson, or any experienced quarterback for that matter, would give the Jets a lot more security and wouldn't end the season if Smith gets hurt and misses an extended period of time.
