The New York Jets are rolling into the 2026 season with Geno Smith as the starter and rookie Cade Klubnik as one of the backup quarterbacks, but with no imminent Tyrod Taylor signing, names like Cooper Rush and Russell Wilson are being discussed as possible veteran stopgaps behind Smith.

Wilson may be of particular interest to this franchise, as the Jets are trying everything they can to make sure they can secure him for one last ride in New York.

The Jets, per Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic, hosted Wilson for a visit. While nothing is official at this point between the two parties, it sounds like Smith himself might be one of the biggest proponents of giving Wilson another chance to make it as a quarterback in New York.

Smith, who was Wilson's backup with the Seattle Seahawks for three seasons before the borderline Hall of Famer was eventually traded to a Denver Broncos team that had Mougey in the front office, was reportedly presented with multiple backup quarterback options and was very excited about getting to link up with Wilson.

Jets interested in Russell Wilson as backup QB to Geno Smith

It's been rough sledding for Wilson since leaving the Seahawks. After two ill-fated seasons in Denver that led to a massive dead cap hit, Wilson limped to the playoffs with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Wilson started just three games last season before poor play forced the Giants to turn to rookie Jaxson Dart.

Wilson will turn 38 years old in November, and his trademark mobility has eroded from what it was in the glory days. His starting days are over, but his ability to pick up an offense quickly and deliver deep balls makes him more attractive than the perpetually injured Taylor or subpar Rush.

Wilson not only gives the Jets an experienced option behind Smith, but he also is someone who can provide at least passable quarterback play should Smith either continue to regress or get injured. A coaching staff on the hot seat is likely not going to give Cade Klubnik the reins as the unquestioned QB2.

The Jets will try to win with Smith, but if something arises, and the season isn't too far gone to let Klubnik strut his stuff in the name of development, Glenn and Frank Reich can at least feel confident in Wilson operating the offense at a level Jets fans are unfamiliar with.
