The New York Jets had their first padded practice of training camp on Monday morning, and several big names were unfortunately absent on the field.

Rookie first-round draft choice Kenyon Sadiq sat out practice, but that's thanks to New York's maintenance plan to ease the tight end back to full strength from his hernia surgery.

But other key contributors were notably sitting out Monday's practice, including nose tackle T'Vondre Sweat, edge Joseph Ossai, and rookie cornerback D'Angelo Ponds.

Those three players figure to play major roles for their respective positions ahead of the 2026 season, so hopefully they're back on the field sooner rather than later. Aaron Glenn seemed to downplay the seriousness of the injuries to reporters Monday morning.

Aaron Glenn doesn't think injured New York Jets will be out 'too much longer'

At Glenn's press conference, he assured that the three injured players will be out much longer, but confirmed that they're unlikely to be back this week, according to The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt.

"Aaron Glenn said he doesn’t expect T’Vondre Sweat, Joe Ossai or D’Angelo Ponds back this week. Said he doesn’t think they’ll be out too much longer."

It's a positive update, considering how important all three players are to the Jets in 2026. Depending on how Ponds performs in training camp, they should all be considered Week 1 starters.

Sweat was acquired in a trade with the Tennessee Titans at the very beginning of the season to be the team's nose tackle. He figures to be a featured piece in the new Jets' defensive line rotation.

Ossai is another major defensive piece for the Jets heading into the 2026 season. He figures to be an early -down chess piece across from No. 2 overall pick David Bailey, while former first-round pick Will McDonald rotates in on obvious passing situations.

The former Cincinnati Bengals pass rusher started training camp on the PUP list and has yet to be reactivated.

Finally, the rookie cornerback, Ponds, is arguably the most important of the bunch to get back on the field. As a young player, he needs all the reps he can get to refine his game and hopefully earn a starting gig.

The nickel cornerback spot seems to be Ponds' job to lose, with his only real competition being Jarvis Brownlee Jr., a strong tackler and run defender but volatile in coverage.

Ponds should be able to beat him out, but only if he's able to get back on the field. Hopefully all three are back soon, as Glenn indicated.
