The New York Jets are three weeks into training camp at this point, and they've yet to fully display themselves at full strength. Injuries happen, of course, and the Jets have been fortunate not to face anything season-ending for any of their key pieces.

Free agent acquisition Joseph Ossai, an expected starter across from No. 2 overall pick David Bailey, started camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list, but passed his physical on Tuesday and is expected to resume practicing sometime next week, per the New York Post's Brian Costello.

New York is also missing some members of its 2026 draft class, with first-round tight end Kenyon Sadiq expected to miss the remainder of training camp while recovering from a setback in the wake of his hernia surgery. Second-round draft choice D'Angelo Ponds has yet to participate in training camp as he deals with a calf injury.

Fortunately, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn provided an update on Ponds' return after Day 2 of joint practice with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Wednesday, and believes the former Indiana Hoosier is close to being back on the field.

New York Jets rookie CB D'Angelo Ponds could be back as soon as next week

The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt shared Glenn's response when asked about Ponds' eventual return, and it sounds like a positive update for the Jets rookie.

"Aaron Glenn said 'hopefully' D’Angelo Ponds will be able to do some things next week but he’s not going to push it before he’s ready."

So, Ponds won't necessarily be back at 100% capacity within the next week or so, but he'll at minimum be back on the practice field, which is about as good news as you can hope for.

The Jets' secondary has received some negative reviews so far throughout training camp, with SNY's Connor Hughes going so far as to say he has "legitimate concerns" about the backend of New York's defense.

But that note came without knowing what Ponds will offer to the team's defense, particularly in the secondary. Despite being a rookie, the reigning collegiate national champion is expected to compete for a starting job at nickel cornerback, a position he excelled at with Indiana.

He won't be an instant fix, but adding another young, talented piece to the mix will surely raise the ceiling. Ponds had a nose for the football throughout his collegiate career, and that should carry with him as he makes his jump to the pros.
