Aaron Glenn plays coy when asked about Jets' preseason plans against Buccaneers

The New York Jets have their first major test of the summer coming up this week, with two joint practices against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers coming up on Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by their first preseason bout on Friday evening.

It will be the first taste of action for the Jets not facing one another, and it provides a solid test that should help New York figure out where they're at this point in the offseason.

Tampa Bay wasn't a playoff team last year, sure, but they have been for the last two under the guidance of quarterback Baker Mayfield and head coach Todd Bowles. They have the pedigree of a team that the Jets will want to match this upcoming season.

But what are the Jets' plans for participation from their starters heading into the practice sessions and preseason game? Will they hold out starters, or is all hands on deck at MetLife Stadium on Friday night?

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn, a long-time personal friend of Bucs head coach Todd Bowles, was asked about his plans for Friday night's preseason game and if he plans on playing veteran quarterback Geno Smith.

Glenn declined to give a straight answer and instead spoke about his excitement for his players getting live reps.

"I will answer that more in the week, but I will tell you right now, my mentality is that everybody's playing and I can't tell you how long. But these joint practices, our first-team guys are gonna get a number of reps against their first-team guys. That's how me and Todd want it. And man, we're gonna get really good work. Like two days of really good work against these guys. This is a team that's been to the playoffs."

So, Glenn says his mentality is "everybody's playing," but it remains to be seen for exactly how long. Maybe we'll see some of the Jets starters for a drive each on both sides of the ball.

Regardless, the joint practices will be the real test for New York's first-team offense and defense. Despite preseason games being played under the bright lights, the intersquad scrimmages typically carry more intensity.

The Jets' offense, which had a sloppy outing at practice on Saturday, will get a chance to really test its progress against a stingy Bucs defense. Even without Vita Vea, it should be a good measuring stick to see where they're at.
