Jets shouldn't bother throwing their hat in the ring for Vita Vea

Considering how much draft capital the New York Jets have, they should be considered a contender for any star player who may be available on the trade market, and Vita Vea is no different.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' standout defensive tackle requested a trade late Monday evening, per ESPN's Adam Schefter, amid a continued contract dispute. Vita, a long-time presence at the nose of the Bucs' defense, obviously wants to get paid.

But just because he's looking for a new home doesn't necessarily mean the Jets should do whatever it takes to trade for the former Pro Bowler, despite the fact that they are missing some star power on their defensive line in the wake of the Quinnen Williams trade.

Instead, the Jets seem to be constructing their defensive front differently than they have in years past. Instead of one star player and several veterans on small contracts, New York's defensive line is much deeper and features a talented rotation.

Jets have no need for Vita Vea with their current defensive line

All this isn't to say that the Jets wouldn't be a better team with Vea in their ranks. He's one of the league's best interior pass rushers and would fill the void that Williams left behind.

But instead of giving up much-needed future draft capital for an aging star in need of a top-of-the-market extension, it doesn't seem like the right choice for where the Jets are right now.

Besides, Darren Mougey and the Jets front office have done an incredible job of retooling New York's defensive line this offseason. Harrison Phillips and Jowon Briggs were already a solid base, but trading for T'Vondre Sweat and signing David Onyemata in free agency made it a staunch rotation.

Not to mention, Briggs, Phillips and Onyemata are all playing on expiring contracts in 2026, and the Jets will have to pick and choose which of the veteran defensive tackles they wish to keep around.

Trading for Vea and paying him a deal worth up to $27.8 million per year (according to Spotrac) would not be productive for the Jets.

And those draft picks would go to much better use building out other areas of the roster, or trading up for a potential franchise quarterback come 2027.
