One of the biggest changes the New York Jets made this offseason was the makeup of the interior of their defensive line.
After trading away Quinnen Williams last season, the Jets needed more depth to add to their rotation of Harrison Phillips and Jowon Briggs, two players set to enter their second seasons in New York.
Remake the line they did, trading former first-round pick Jermaine Johnson to the Tennessee Titans in exchange for T'Vondre Sweat, signing David Onyemata in free agency, and drafting Florida State's Darrell Jackson Jr. in the 2026 NFL Draft.
But one addition is standing out more than the rest to Briggs, and he spoke glowingly about one of the Jets' newest defensive tackles in an interview with Eric Allen.
Jowon Briggs says T'Vondre Sweat is a pure nose tackle
On The Official Jets Podcast, Briggs couldn't help but contain his excitement about Sweat's development as a young player, and almost sounded envious of his physical build.
"When you think about a nose tackle, there you go. There's T. Sweat. I mean, that guy has the makings of anything he could wanna be. I'm not gonna say envious, because I love how I'm built, but man, size there, agility, and he has the awareness, which is something that people don't think about. You got two people going this way, you feel the pressure on your back pad, being able to pad back and cross over to go ahead and get in the quarterback's face."Jowon Briggs
Sweat, the 38th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, figures to play a key role on the Jets' defensive line in 2026, particularly, helping fix their run defense.
Last season, the Jets were one of the worst teams at stopping opposing running backs. They let up an average of 139.5 rushing yards per game, good for 29th-worst in the league.
With the Titans in 2025, Sweat was one of the most efficient run-stoppers, according to Pro Football Focus, registering a run-defense grade of 79.3, good for fourth-best in the league at his position.
For a player who is only 24-years-old, it seems like the sky is the limit, and if Sweat's teammates have given any indication about his potential, the Jets could have a special player on their hands.
