The NY Jets are going to hire Aaron Glenn to be their next head coach. That's been the expectation for at least the last 24 hours, and barring any unexpected developments, it's still the perception around the league.
NFL insider Josina Anderson reported Wednesday morning that Glenn "has made it known he's planning to take the Jets head coach job." He reportedly informed the Detroit Lions and others as early as yesterday that he intends to be the next Jets head coach.
According to Anderson, "barring a major setback or flub," Glenn will be hired by the Jets. We're still awaiting official confirmation on the hire, but all signs point to Glenn being named Jets head coach possibly as soon as today.
The two sides are reportedly ironing out some contractual details, while Glenn is actively reaching out to his NFL connections to assemble his staff. Both parties remain confident that the deal will be finalized soon.
NY Jets expect to hire Aaron Glenn as head coach
Glenn and expected new Jets general manager Lance Newmark interviewed for a second time with the organization on Wednesday. Many expected the Jets to work out a deal with Glenn and Newmark before the end of the night, but that ultimately didn't happen.
Glenn and Newmark reportedly left Florham Park sometime Tuesday night, with Glenn flying back home to Detroit via Woody Johnson's private plane.
FOX Sports NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported Tuesday night that the Jets made a "substantial offer" to Glenn and that the Jets' job "is his if he wants it." Multiple reports have suggested that the Jets are Glenn's preferred landing spot.
A three-time Pro Bowl cornerback, Glenn spent eight years playing for the Jets before beginning his post-playing career as a personnel scout for the organization in 2012. He has deep ties to the franchise and remains a popular figure at One Jets Drive.
Glenn still has an interview scheduled with the Saints later this week. That interview was supposed to be on Wednesday but inclement weather forced the team to reschedule. There's a very real chance that he never makes it to New Orleans for that meeting.
The Jets and Glenn will continue to speak over the coming hours, with the widespread belief that a deal will be reached in the near future. Stay tuned.
