Barring an unexpected schedule flex, football fans will be spared the sight of seeing the New York Jets on national television this season.
For what it’s worth, Aaron Glenn doesn’t seem surprised.
Speaking with reporters last week, Glenn reiterated his belief that teams must prove that they deserve to play in primetime. The NFL no longer forces all 32 teams to play at least one nationally televised game.
The Jets join the Cardinals, Dolphins, Raiders, and Titans as teams with no primetime games.
“That’s the good thing about this league,” Glenn said. “You earn your right — players, coaches, everybody. You earn your right to get what you get in this league.”
Aaron Glenn’s commentary on the Jets’ schedule is dead-on
Cimini noted that the Jets have lost 16 of their last 19 night games. Granted, one of those wins was a pyrrhic victory, given that the Week 1 triumph in 2023 resulted in Aaron Rodgers’ season-ending torn left Achilles tendon.
The NFL also elected not to send the Jets to London for the first time since 2023. That omission was especially noteworthy because Jets owner Woody Johnson served as the United States’ ambassador from 2017 to 2021 during Donald Trump’s first presidency.
If you believe in reverse psychology, then both Glenn and the NFL are using full-blown disrespect to challenge the Jets.
Ironically, the Jets have arguably the best chance of those five teams to be flexed into a primetime window.
The Cardinals are a trainwreck, and the Titans’ decision to pair Robert Saleh — a defensive-minded coach who oversaw the Zach Wilson era — with Cam Ward isn’t exactly encouraging.
If the NFL didn’t think the Raiders warranted a national TV game even after drafting Fernando Mendoza, that should be all you need to know.
As for the Dolphins, sportsbooks widely believe they’ll challenge the Jets, Browns, and Cardinals for the No. 1 pick. Miami traded Jaylen Waddle to the Broncos and sent Minkah Fitzpatrick to the Jets in March.
NFL flex scheduling begins in Week 5 for Sunday night games.
Based on roster outlook and preseason projections, potential flex options for the Jets include Week 9 against the Chiefs, Week 14 against the Broncos, and the Week 18 finale against the Bills.
