Aaron Glenn didn’t beat around the bush on Wednesday. Two days after officially benching Justin Fields for veteran Tyrod Taylor, the New York Jets head coach finally explained why he made the switch in his first time speaking to the media since the news broke.
And he did it in the most straightforward way possible.
Asked what led him to Taylor, Glenn didn’t mention scheme fit, matchup advantages, or long-term planning. Instead, he delivered a blunt four-word answer that summed up the entire situation.
"Because I wanted to."Aaron Glenn
Glenn later expanded on the decision, saying Fields “understood it” even if he wasn’t happy, and that his job is simply to choose “what’s best for this team.” But the initial quote said everything we need to know. Glenn made the move because he felt it was time.
It was another moment in what’s been an…interesting…stretch of press conferences from the first-year head coach, one that has ranged from prickly to evasive to, now, refreshingly direct.

Wednesday’s media session wasn’t the first time Glenn made headlines for the way he handles presser questions, but it was certainly the clearest he’s ever been about the team’s quarterback situation in a while.
For weeks, Glenn has been combative, vague, or openly irritated when pressed about Fields’ struggles, often deflecting or declining to answer entirely. This is the first time reporters have gotten him to name a starter in over a month.
But his guard finally dropped. After watching Fields post one of the worst statistical stretches of any Jets quarterback in recent memory — fewer than 60 passing yards in four of his nine starts — Glenn admitted that the offense needed a different player under center.
Taylor isn't going to be the savior, but he is the safer, steadier option, and Glenn made it obvious he wasn’t interested in dressing the decision up with coach-speak.
The honesty was much appreciated from a coach who spent half the season bristling at even the mention of the quarterback situation. It suggests that Glenn is starting to understand what he can and can't say in press conferences without feeling the need to just shut down and avoid questions entirely.
Of course, Taylor isn’t guaranteed the job for long. His injury history and the Jets’ lost season make it likely that undrafted rookie Brady Cook will eventually see the field. Glenn didn’t commit to anything beyond Week 12, and given his track record with questions, there’s no guarantee he will anytime soon.
But on Wednesday, at least, he offered exactly what Jets fans have been waiting for: a clear, decisive explanation. Sometimes the simplest answer really is the real one.
