New York Jets 2019: Ranking the 53-man roster — #25 CJ Mosley
By Steven Blush
The New York Jets season is over so it’s time to evaluate the 53-man roster. Let’s continue this daily ranking with #25, linebacker CJ Mosley.
Every New York Jets fan knows about the free-agent deal bestowed on 27-year-old Baltimore linebacker/field general CJ Mosley: five years, $82.5 million, with $51 million fully guaranteed.
They know how his first year in green-and-white ended in the third quarter of the season-opener against the Buffalo Bills, after totally dominating the game’s first half. He sat out six weeks with a severe groin pull — and re-aggravated the injury early in that Monday Night Football massacre against the New England Patriots.
In other words, Mosley never played a full game for the green and white in 2019.
Jets fans also know that the Baltimore Ravens selected the Alabama middle linebacker in the first round of the 2014 Draft — one pick before then-GM John Idzik pounced on safety Calvin Pryor. FWIW, “The Louisville Slugger” has been out of football since December 2017.
Gregg Williams expected that CJ and Avery Williamson would anchor his defense, from the inside. Only such a coaching genius could’ve survived such injuries — bending but not breaking with a ragtag unit of Blake Cashman, Neville Hewitt, Albert McClellan, James Burgess, Jr., OLB Brandon Copeland, and almost every high-energy D-lineman on the roster. Going into the 2020 training camp with these pieces, the New York Jets’ front seven is now a strength moving forward.
Talent-wise, CJ would be listed Top 3 in this 53-man ranking. But he tumbles mightily based on 2019’s meager contributions.
