New York Jets 2019: Ranking the 53-man roster — #28 Ty Montgomery
By Steven Blush
The New York Jets season is over so it’s time to evaluate the 53-man roster. Let’s continue this daily ranking with #28, running back Ty Montgomery.
High-voltage offense was expected from this Adam Gase-led New York Jets after a free agency frenzy that included dynamic running back/wide receiver Ty Montgomery. Big things were predicted for the Green Bay Packers’ 2015 Draft third-round pick (94th overall). So why didn’t things pan out in 2019?
The headstrong head coach of the New York Jets must not have liked what he’d seen from Montgomery to place him so deep in his offensive dog house. Ty looked great in camp and in preseason — and then became a total non-factor, with just 193 yards (32 rushes for 103 yards, 13 receptions for 90 yards).
Given Le’Veon Bell’s dismal season, this organization’s “quarterback whisperer” head coach was consistently unwilling or unable to effectively utilize the dynamic hybrid rusher/flanker.
On one hand, Gase’s decision can be seen as a form of gridiron malpractice. On the other hand, Montgomery reeks of ex-general manager Mike Maccagnan.
The ex-Stanford star tore up the NFL in his rookie season, averaging 31.1 yards per kickoff return. But those numbers have precipitously declined over time. This year, his 18 returns averaged a woeful 20.2 per return. That in itself explains why so many Jets drives began deep in their own territory.
It’s impossible to predict Joe Douglas’ intentions here. But another one-year $850,000 with $90,000 guaranteed might win the veteran RB/WR a chance to compete at 2020 training camp in Florham Park.
Don’t be surprised if some other GM jump right in on Montgomery. He ain’t no benchwarmer.
