New York Jets: Expectations for Calvin Pryor in 2015

The New York Jets have been getting quite the attention lately since their defense this upcoming season will definitely be something special to watch. Safety Calvin Pryor failed to deliver last year but that can be chalked up to the tough transition most rookies endure during their first year in the NFL. He’s been nicknamed the “Bonecrusher” due to his hard-hitting when it comes to tackling but he failed to deliver in 2014 and also learned the hard way that he’s not playing college football anymore.

As he was late to team meetings, missed plenty of easy tackles and was eventually demoted, Pryor’s expectations heading into 2015 will definitely be much higher. This time around, he should deliver nicely due to the simple fact that he now can play at the natural position he played mostly at Louisville.

Last season, Pryor was called upon to play as the Jets’ premiere free safety but couldn’t handle his assignments as opposing teams saw plenty of opportunities to burn him deep as it was all new to him. With a new head coach and defensive coordinator in town, Pryor will now go back to play his natural position of strong safety.

With the ability to now execute at a position he found incredible success in at Louisville, he should definitely put up much better numbers in his sophomore season. With a year of NFL experience under his belt, he shouldn’t have those “deer in headlights” moments that plagued him most of last year. His tardiness should also be much-improved since head coach Todd Bowles has already established his strictness and expects much out of his players in every aspect of the game.

Overall, expect to see Pryor finally live up to his nickname and truly be a force to reckon with on the Jets’ defensive secondary. The Jets will unleash him and use his speed and tackling abilities much to their advantage as they work hard to field one of the top defensive units in 2015.
