  • The New York Jets are certainly getting their homework done.

Recently, it was reported that Marcus Mariota was in New York for a private workout with the Jets.  We know that earlier in this off-season, the Jets sent a full contingent of employees to watch Mariota workout during his pro day.  Either the Jets have interest in Mariota, or they are creating one heck of a smoke screen to entice a trade, just in case Chip Kelly might be listening.

The Jets have begun to price the market for trading up, as we noted yesterday from Mike Maccagnan’s press conference.  With Jameis Winston almost guaranteed to go to Tampa Bay, it means the Jets would be trading up for Marcus Mariota.  The Jets are certainly learning all they can.

Should the Jets trade up to get him?  Mike Mayock thinks so.  He believes that the Jets should jump to take him if he falls to number six, and thinks they should make a serious move to trade up to get him if he falls to number five.

It certainly wouldn’t take much to move up one spot.  But, should the Jets?  They had better be sure that Marcus Mariota is their guy.  When you are unsure about your quarterback situation, and you pick one in the top ten, your intent is to have that quarterback play quickly.  It’s not like the Jets have an established veteran at the position, otherwise this would be a very different discussion.

If the quarterback you are discussing in this spot isn’t ready to play immediately, and I haven’t heard anyone say that he is, he shouldn’t be the choice this high at a weak quarterback position.  That is why I disagree with the notion of rushing to draft Marcus Mariota.

If Maccagnan thinks Mariota is the guy, he had better be SURE he is the guy.
